The Son of Man: Love Triumphs Over Beasts

Daniel 7 begins by moving from the people of God in the court of the nations to the nations standing before the court of God. The text sees the churning sea, the old image of chaos, and the four winds of heaven stirring it up. The beasts that rise from the waters are not random monsters. They are empires, rulers, and states, the kind of powers that Israel knew all too well as a small and vulnerable people tossed around on the turbulent seas of history.

Daniel’s vision gives government its due, but not too much. The four winds show that the state exists within God’s providential ordering of the world, holding back anarchy and making ordinary life possible. Romans 13 can therefore say that governing authorities are instituted by God. But Daniel will not let the matter rest there. Revelation 13 also has to be heard. The state may restrain chaos, but it can also become beastly, feeding on fear, wielding violence, and dehumanizing the very people it claims to protect.

The beasts are terrifying, but Daniel does not imagine God sending a bigger beast to win the match. There is no “who would win” contest in heaven. The Ancient of Days simply takes his seat, the books are opened, and judgment is rendered. The terrible beast is undone with a word. The rulers of the nations may posture, rage, and speak arrogantly, but Psalm 2 says the Lord sits in heaven and laughs.

Daniel’s true answer comes in the one like a son of man. Dominion is not given to the most monstrous power, but to the one who is most fully and truly human. The kingdom comes from above, not from another beast rising below. In the New Testament, this figure comes into focus as the crucified and ascended Jesus, the truly human one whose reign restores humanity rather than destroying it.

The saints share in that reign, but in the time between the times that sharing takes the form of suffering love. The love enthroned over history is not sentimental. It is the love that washes feet, tears down walls around the heart, and meets fear without becoming a monster. Fred Rogers becomes a picture of that strange kingdom imagination, sending messages of love over walls and telling children they are beloved. Daniel’s vision declares that the truth of creation is not found in howling little horns or rampaging beasts, but in the current of life and love flowing from the throne of the crucified and ascended Lord.

In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel saw a dream and visions of his head as he lay in his bed. Then he wrote down the dream and told the sum of the matter. [38:50]

Daniel declared, “I saw in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were stirring up the great sea. [41:19]

And four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another. [43:22]
