Solomon's Request: Seeking Godly Wisdom and Discernment

First Kings 3 places Solomon at a hard beginning, right in the middle of a transition of power. David is dying, Adonijah is trying to take the throne, and Bathsheba and Nathan come before David because Solomon was the one David intended to be king. David gives Solomon the charge to be strong, show himself a man, and observe what the Lord requires, to walk in His ways and keep His commands.

Solomon’s situation begins with conflict in his own heart. The text says Solomon loved the Lord and walked according to David’s statutes, “except that he offered sacrifices and burned incense on the high places.” That little word, except, tells a big story. Solomon loves the Lord, but he also chooses convenience over conviction, and that same kind of divided obedience shows up when people love the Lord but still hold on to gossip, bad treatment of others, or whatever fills in the blank.

Solomon’s commitment still shows up in a powerful way. The king goes to Gibeon and offers a thousand burnt offerings to the Lord. After that act of devotion, God comes to him and says, “Ask for whatever you want.” Solomon does not ask for popularity, possessions, or power. Solomon remembers God’s kindness to David, recognizes his own weakness, and admits that he is “only a little child” who does not know how to carry out his duties.

Solomon’s request is simple and deep. He asks for a discerning heart to govern God’s people and to distinguish between right and wrong. Wisdom is not just having a head full of facts. Knowledge is something a person knows, but wisdom begins with knowing God. A person can have a degree and still not know how to plug the hole when the water starts coming into the mine.

God is pleased with Solomon’s request and gives him a wise and discerning heart, along with riches and honor that he did not ask for. Solomon’s wisdom is seen when two women claim the same living baby, and he calls for a sword to reveal the true mother’s heart. The sword points to the Word of God, living and active, able to judge the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

Solomon also builds the great temple, pouring wealth into the kingdom of God. Yet Solomon’s wisdom later wanes because his heart is turned by wrong influences. First Kings 11 shows that his wives led him after other gods. Ecclesiastes brings the matter home: fear God and keep His commandments, because that is the whole duty of man.

Solomon made a marriage alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt. He took Pharaoh’s daughter and brought her into the city of David until he had finished building his own house and the house of the Lord and the wall around Jerusalem. [13:10]
The people were sacrificing at the high places, however, because no house had yet been built for the name of the Lord. [13:30]
Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of David his father, only he sacrificed and made offerings at the high places. [38:58]
