Why Small-Mindedness Rejects New Ideas | Hello Pastor Mike

Mark 6 brings Jesus back to Nazareth, his hometown, the little off-the-beaten-path village where people thought they already knew him. Nazareth had maybe a few hundred people, a small Galilean farming village, conservative, devout, familiar, and ordinary. Jesus comes into that familiar place with his disciples, steps into the synagogue, and begins to speak with wisdom and power. The people are amazed at first, but amazement turns into scoffing.

Mark shows that Jesus has changed. God the Father has already affirmed him at the baptism, and the Holy Spirit has rested on him and empowered him for ministry. Jesus has been traveling with God, traveling with new friends, healing the sick, casting out demons, and raising the dead. Traveling with God will shape a person. Traveling with God will broaden a worldview. When God is active in a life, change happens.

Nazareth, though, cannot see the new Jesus. The hometown crowd reduces him to the old identity: “He’s just a carpenter.” The people know his family, his brothers, his sisters, his background, and they assume that the Jesus they used to know is the only Jesus there can be. Mark exposes their small thinking. They see the wisdom and power, but they miss the boat because they cannot believe God could change someone so familiar.

The image of the circus elephant helps name that kind of bondage. The elephant grows bigger and stronger, but still stands there tied to a stake because the past taught it not to pull. Small thinking keeps people trapped by what used to be. Small-minded people can be threatened by new ideas, and when God is active in someone’s life, that person’s faith might offend some people. The call is simple: grow anyways.

Jesus does not let Nazareth’s unbelief stop him. The text says he could do only a few miracles there because of their unbelief, and then he moves on to other villages. Jesus stays influential where he can. He invests where people are receptive. He does not quit ministry because some people reject him. He redirects his energy toward people who are open to God’s touch.

The prayers at the end ask God for two gifts: discernment and encouragement. Discernment asks God to help distinguish truth from falsehood, so the Holy Spirit’s work is not missed. Encouragement asks God for eyes to see what people are becoming, not just who they used to be.

Jesus left that part of the country and returned with his disciples to Nazareth, his hometown. The next Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. They asked, “Where did he get all this wisdom and the power to perform such miracles?” Then they scoffed, “He’s just a carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon.
