God’s love stands at the front of everything, because holy, unpolluted, perfect God looks down on misfits and mess ups and loves them. Human sin separates people from that holy God, because people do not think right, act right, talk right, or treat other folk right. God did not design it that way, and God does not desire it to stay that way.

God the Father sent God the Son, Jesus Christ, into the world. Jesus was born of the virgin Mary, lived about thirty three years, and never sinned or made a mistake. Jesus, truly 100% fully God and truly 100% fully man, was hated by the religious elites, illegally condemned, beaten, mocked, crowned with thorns, nailed to a cross, and fully physically killed. Leviticus says blood must be shed for sin to be forgiven, and Romans says the wage of sin is death. Jesus had no sin of His own to pay for, so Jesus had the ability and authority to pay the price for other people’s sin. Jesus rose on the third day, conquered sin and death, ascended to heaven, and now rules and reigns alive over His kingdom.

Jesus commands every person to repent and believe. Repentance turns from personal ways, the world’s ways, and Satan’s ways toward God and His ways. Faith believes that Jesus is the Son of God, that Jesus died for sin, and that Jesus rose from the grave. Jesus as Lord means Jesus is master, even slave master, and the believer belongs to Him.

First Corinthians 5 then puts that gospel truth right up against sin in the local church. Paul names sexual immorality plainly, even the kind that the Gentiles would not tolerate, a man sleeping with his father’s wife. Sexual immorality is anything that simulates or stimulates sexual activity outside the marriage of one man and one woman, and it is sin. Paul’s concern is not picking on one group of people, because the flesh pulls all kinds of people toward all kinds of sexual sin.

Paul says the church’s arrogance should have been grief. Sin will permeate if it is not eliminated. A little leaven leavens the whole batch of dough, so Christ’s bride must clean out the old leaven of malice and evil and live with sincerity and truth. Christ is the Passover Lamb who has been sacrificed, so purity is not optional decoration. Paul also clarifies that outsiders are God’s business, but those who claim to be brothers or sisters must be held to Christian standards. But instead of loving ourselves or saying we love other people so much, we must come to a point where we love god so much that we live according to what he says. And then we love him so much. We don't have to muddy the waters or be ambiguous. Anytime we desire or our desire contradicts what god says, then we're called to adjust to god. We're not called to adjust him to us.”
