Paul sets Romans 5:20 right in the middle of man’s universal sickness: “the law entered, that the offence might abound.” Sin came in through Adam, death came by sin, and that poison has been running rampant ever since. Sin does not sit still. Sin abounds, increases, spreads, and waxes worse and worse. Like leaven in a lump, a little bit gets in and begins working through everything.

Sin infects the mind, the heart, the eyes, the mouth, the ears, the hands, the feet, and the flesh. The mind becomes a battleground full of fear, anxiety, and discouragement when it is not washed by the Word of God. The eyes are never satisfied, the ears itch for what feeds the flesh, and the mouth can reveal wickedness even while somebody has cleaned up other outward areas. Self-righteousness forgets that getting a few categories right does not make anybody right before God.

The flesh remains flesh. The soul that Christ has saved bears the divine nature, but this body still likes worldly stuff. The Holy Ghost must rule what enters the ears, what fills the eyes, what comes out of the mouth, and where the feet go. God’s people cannot live holy or separated unto God by sheer grit. Grace is not permission to play around with sin, because Romans 6 answers that idea with, “God forbid.” Grace is the remedy for people who cannot get it all right and desperately need the righteousness of God.

Sin always starts subtle and then becomes a master. A teenager experimenting with drugs never plans on chains. A person taking a drink never imagines losing a home, a spouse, children, work, and dignity. A little flirt, a little pornography, a little compromise in the schedule, a little absence from church, can become a road that nobody meant to walk. The devil is not satisfied with a person merely sitting in bondage. The devil wants destruction.

Grace, however, does much more abound. Christ’s blood and God’s grace are greater than the sin that has permeated every part of life. Grace does not leave a fallen child of God on the ground. The Holy Ghost gets that child back up, gives help, brings godly counsel, and supplies victory. That mountain of sin has no final word, because an ocean of God’s grace covers it all.
