Standing beneath the vast expanse of the night sky, we are reminded of the majesty of God’s handiwork and the humbling truth of our own smallness. Yet, even as we feel insignificant in the face of the universe, God declares that each of us is fearfully and wonderfully made, created in His image, and deeply known and loved by Him. The same God who set the stars in place is the One who remembers you, values you, and calls you His own. Let the wonder of creation lead you to marvel at both God’s greatness and the preciousness of your life in His sight. [05:36]
Psalm 8:1-4 (CSB)
Lord, our Lord, how magnificent is your name throughout the earth! You have covered the heavens with your majesty. From the mouths of infants and nursing babies, you have established a stronghold on account of your adversaries in order to silence the enemy and the avenger. When I observe your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you set in place, what is a human being that you remember him, a son of man that you look after him?
Reflection: When was the last time you paused to consider both the vastness of creation and the truth that God knows and values you personally? How does this change the way you see yourself today?
God calls His people to shine like stars in a world that is often dark and broken. This shining is not about drawing attention to ourselves, but about reflecting the hope, love, and truth of Christ to those around us. Even in a crooked and twisted generation, we are invited to hold firmly to the word of life and let our lives be a beacon that points others to Jesus. Your presence, your words, and your actions can make an eternal difference as you shine with the light God has placed within you. [08:39]
Philippians 2:13-16 (CSB)
For it is God who is working in you both to will and to work according to his good purpose. Do everything without grumbling and arguing, so that you may be blameless and pure, children of God who are faultless in a crooked and perverted generation, among whom you shine like stars in the world, by holding firm to the word of life.
Reflection: In what specific situation this week can you choose to “shine like a star” by holding firm to God’s word and showing Christ’s love, even when it’s difficult?
Jesus declares that you are the light of the world—not because of your own strength or goodness, but because He, the true Light, lives in you. Your calling is not to manufacture your own light, but to let Christ’s light shine through you in your daily life. Every act of kindness, every word of encouragement, and every moment of service is an opportunity to reflect Jesus to a world in need. Remember, your light is not for your own sake, but so that others may see Christ and give glory to God. [10:16]
Matthew 5:14, 16 (CSB)
“You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden... In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”
Reflection: What is one way you can intentionally reflect Christ’s light to someone in your life today, rather than seeking recognition for yourself?
The light we shine is not our own; it is the light of Christ within us. Jesus is the Light of the World, and when we follow Him, we do not walk in darkness but have the light of life. Our ability to shine comes from being connected to Him—through His word, through baptism, and through faith. When we feel our light is dim or obscured, we are reminded to return to Jesus, the true source, and let His strength, mercy, and victory fill us anew. [13:13]
John 8:12 (CSB)
Jesus spoke to them again: “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.”
Reflection: Is there an area of your life where you feel like your light is dim or obscured? How can you turn to Jesus today to be renewed and strengthened by His light?
Just as a single star draws the eye but a constellation guides the way, so too does the church shine brightest when we come together in unity. Each person’s gifts, service, and presence matter, and together we form a dynamic display of Christ’s love to the world. Whether serving in big events or small acts of kindness, your participation in the body of Christ helps guide others home to Jesus. You are not alone; you are part of a community intentionally placed by God to shine His light in the world. [21:33]
1 Corinthians 12:27 (CSB)
Now you are the body of Christ, and individual members of it.
Reflection: What is one way you can use your unique gifts to serve alongside others in your church or community this week, helping to shine Christ’s light more brightly together?
A long-awaited family trip to Big Bend National Park became a powerful reminder of the majesty of God’s creation. Standing beneath a sky ablaze with thousands of stars, far more than I’d ever seen before, I was struck by the vastness of the universe and the smallness of humanity. Yet, in that smallness, there is profound worth—each of us is fearfully and wonderfully made, known and loved by the Creator who set those very stars in place. The words of Psalm 8 came alive: “What is man that you are mindful of him?” In the immensity of creation, God remembers and values each one of us.
The stars also reminded me of God’s promises and His ongoing work through His people. Just as God called Abraham to look at the stars as a sign of His faithfulness, and as Paul wrote to the Philippians that we are to “shine like stars in the world,” we are called to reflect Christ’s light in a world that is often dark and confusing. This is not a light we generate ourselves, but the light of Christ shining through us. Our good works are not for our own glory, but so that others might see Jesus and be drawn to Him.
Yet, it’s easy for that light to be obscured. The distractions and frustrations of daily life, the temptation to grumble or withdraw, and the brokenness of the world can dim our witness. But the darkness of the world is not a surprise to God, nor is it a reason for us to retreat. Instead, we are called to engage, to let Christ’s light shine through us, confident that His light cannot be overcome by darkness.
Importantly, we do not shine alone. Like stars forming constellations, our individual lights come together in the body of Christ to guide others home. Whether through acts of service, community outreach, or simply loving our neighbors, we reflect Christ’s love more powerfully together than we ever could alone. Every gift, every act of kindness, every partnership in the gospel matters. We are positioned by God, right where we are, to be beacons of hope and grace in our community. May we hold firmly to the word of life and shine brightly, not for our own sake, but for the sake of the world God so loves.
Psalm 8:1, 3-4 (CSB) — > Lord, our Lord, how magnificent is your name throughout the earth! You have covered the heavens with your majesty... When I observe your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you set in place, what is a human being that you remember him, a son of man that you look after him?
Philippians 2:14-16 (CSB) — > Do everything without grumbling and arguing, so that you may be blameless and pure, children of God who are faultless in a crooked and perverted generation, among whom you shine like stars in the world, by holding firm to the word of life.
Matthew 5:14, 16 (CSB) — > You are the light of the world... In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.
See, friends, your life and my life together in Christ is meant to shine in such a way that others see Jesus. This isn't just my idea. This is what Jesus says in Matthew 5, verses 14 and 16. In fact, read those words with me if you can. You are the light of the world. Let your light shine before others. Now, notice what Jesus doesn't say. He doesn't say, try to be the light. Work at being the light. Claim the light. No. He says, you are the light. Already now because of him who is the light of the world. We shine not for our own sake, but we shine for others so that others might see Christ. Our good works are not good for our sake. They're good for our neighbor. They serve to point to Christ alone. [00:09:41] (60 seconds) #YouAreTheLight
But yet, we know we fall short. See, sometimes we know our own weaknesses. We confess it together every time we gather in worship, as we did again this morning. Confess our brokenness. Confess our inability to be that light shining in the darkness. Confess that, yes, sometimes the darkness overwhelms us. But we confess that sin because God has promised to forgive that sin, cleanse us from all unrighteousness, and send us back out to shine like stars in the universe, holding on to his very own word. [00:10:41] (35 seconds) #ConfessAndShine
``When our light is dim and we've lost our way, we once again realize our true light isn't in our own strength, but it's in his strength. Jesus said it so beautifully. He said it in John 8, verse 12. He says, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. The light we shine is not our own, but that which Christ himself has put into us. [00:12:05] (28 seconds) #LightNotOurOwn
It's almost like if we had a cross here, and I know it doesn't reflect very well into where you're looking at, but I want to kind of get you this idea that the light that Jack's going to shine isn't Jack's light. It's going to be Jesus' light through him. And the light that you shine isn't your light, it is Christ's light through you. You get to reflect his love and his light into the darkness of the world around me. It is his strength, it is his righteousness, his mercy, his victory, which fills us and reflects out into the world in darkness, a hope that's found not in ourselves, but in Christ alone. [00:12:57] (36 seconds) #ReflectChristsLight
That's what John describes Jesus as. That looked dark for a while there for Jesus, especially on that day when he's crucified on the cross, that afternoon when the sun is dark and the whole universe, the whole creation reacts to the creator of the world hanging on a tree willingly that he created, suffering and dying. But we know his death is not the answer. It is the answer, but it is the final saying. For three days later, he comes victoriously rising from the grave, overcoming our sin, breaking the world's false lights, restoring our sight and teaching us once again how to shine. [00:17:09] (43 seconds) #VictoryInTheResurrection
So that's what we've been called to do. And that's what my third point on here is that when our individual's lights come together, they shine and they guide people home. One star can draw your eye, but a constellation guides you. Even here with all the city lights, if the sky is bright at night, you can still look up and say, those three stars, that there's, I still see Orion's valley, I still see Polaris, and their patterns tell a story. And that's what the church is. Not just scattered lights, but a constellation placed intentionally by God. [00:17:52] (37 seconds) #TogetherWeGuide
One piece is relatively insignificant and small but you put them together and it creates a dynamic display of light. And similarly, individual Christians with their diverse gifts and backgrounds you form one body, the church. And when you unite it in a common work and a common witness that reflection of Christ's light it looks cool to a world in darkness. [00:21:33] (24 seconds) #DynamicLightDisplay
Your partnership in the gospel allowed that to happen. We had that new parking lot last year we figured it out now so we're going to know how we do this so well to tell that story and crystal clear that the hope we have the reason we do this and invest the resource the time and the energy to it is because we believe Jesus matters and you, the people the community matter to us and to Jesus and we want to let that light shine brightly this year. [00:22:56] (24 seconds) #ShiningHopeInCommunity
Because it's a real Jesus and he comes in real flesh and real blood to give his life as a ransom for many because he's the hope of the world in the midst of a dark world that's in a crooked and perverse generation we get to shine like stars in the midst of it. [00:23:31] (15 seconds) #UnitedInChrist
