In the profound words of Jesus during the Sermon on the Mount, we are reminded that we are the light of the world, a city set on a hill that cannot be hidden. As children of light, we are called to let our light shine before others, illuminating the path to the Father and His glory. This truth is the cornerstone of our series, "Let There Be Light," and it is a call to action for every believer.
We live in a world that is often shrouded in darkness, a darkness that is not merely the absence of light but a spiritual void that many have come to love. The Bible contrasts our natural aversion to physical darkness with a startling affinity for spiritual darkness found in John 3:19. People love the darkness because their deeds are evil, and they refuse to come into the light for fear of exposure. Yet, as followers of Christ, we are not to be content with the darkness around us. We are to be the bearers of light, pushing back the shadows with the truth and love of Jesus.
The statistics of crime and evil in our world are staggering, but they serve to highlight the urgency of our mission. We are surrounded by theft, homicide, robbery, arson, assault, and kidnapping, all of which point to a world in desperate need of the light of Christ. The darkness is pervasive, but it is not impenetrable. God has brought light into this world through His Son, and He continues to do so through His people.
As believers, we are not hidden. We are set on a hill, visible and shining brightly for all to see. Our good works are not for our own glory but to point others to the Father. We are the reflection of Christ's light in this world, and as He is the light, so are we. Our holiness and righteousness are not of our own making but are imparted to us through Christ's redemption.
The church is called to come out of hiding, to shine boldly and courageously for the glory of God. Our light is not just for ourselves but for those who are still trapped in darkness. When we let our light shine, we draw others to Christ, and the darkness is pushed back. Our redemption is not just for our benefit but to reflect the glory of God to a world in need.
The light of Christ is powerful and transformative. There is no darkness too deep that His light cannot penetrate and redeem. The light of Jesus exposes our sin, but it also exonerates us, setting us free from the grip of darkness. We must not run from this light but step into it, embracing the redemption, restoration, and renewal it offers.
God's desire is that none should remain in darkness. From the beginning of creation, when He commanded, "Let there be light," to the sending of His Son as the light of the world, God has been actively dispelling darkness. And one day, He will return to take us to a place where His glory is the only light we need, and there will be no more night.
