Philippians 2:12-18 “Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me.”
[30:51]Matthew 25:1-13 “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’ And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”
[41:12]Matthew 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
Observation questions
- In Philippians 2:12–18, what two actions does Paul say God is doing within believers, and what response does Paul call believers to make?
- What behaviors does Paul contrast with shining like stars and holding forth the word of life?
- In the parable of the ten bridesmaids, what distinguishes the wise bridesmaids from the foolish ones when the bridegroom arrives? [41:49]
- What happened to the small cave stone when it was viewed under a large reading lamp compared with a small penlight? [47:24]
Interpretation questions
- How can believers take salvation seriously as an active, daily life without treating it as something they earn for themselves? [38:24]
- What does Paul’s instruction to shine in a crooked generation suggest about the kind of witness Christians offer through ordinary words, attitudes, and actions?
- Why might the wise bridesmaids be unable to share their oil with those who were unprepared? What does this show about the difference between receiving encouragement from others and relying on another person’s faith? [43:21]
- If every good desire and faithful action begins with God’s work within a person, why should this produce humility and gentleness rather than pride? [52:25]
Application questions
- Where have you been tempted to treat faith as something settled in the past rather than a grace you receive and live into today? What might it look like to acknowledge God’s grace in one ordinary part of your daily routine? [34:29]
- A living plant needs regular care in order to grow. What is one part of your faith that needs attention right now—prayer, Scripture, worship, serving, confession, rest, or Christian community? What small, realistic step could help you tend it this week? [37:29]
- When your “lamp” feels low and you do not feel like shining, where do you usually turn first? How might you return directly to the grace God supplies instead of trying to live on someone else’s “oil”? [43:38]
- Paul names murmuring and arguing as things that can dim the witness of God’s people. Are there patterns of complaining, harshness, or unnecessary arguments that affect your relationships at home, work, school, or church? What would a gentler response look like in one specific situation?
- Think about an ordinary, small, or even difficult part of life that may not seem very holy right now. How might God be inviting you to look again for hidden grace or light there? [48:49]
- Christ’s light makes believers light bearers, not people who draw attention to their own goodness. In what setting this week could humility, gentleness, or quiet service help the light of Christ be seen through you? [53:14]
