#RestNotPerformance
“what kind of performance is required of the sheep in these verses? He lets me rest in green meadows. He leads me beside peaceful streams. He restores my soul. He renews my strength. It almost sounds like I don't have to perform at all. I'm following the shepherd as he takes care of me. It's his action that ministers to me, providing rest, nourishment, beauty, strength, restoration. No to do list, no godly swivel chair, no grades, no comparisons. That is ultimate peace. He restores my soul.”

#JesusIsTheGoodShepherd
“Immediately, the audience gasps. It doesn't say that in the Bible, but I'm sure they did. Because they hear the echoes of Psalm 23. The Lord is my shepherd. Jesus is saying he is the good shepherd. Jesus is the Lord. This is a world changing announcement. This is either sacrilege on the highest level, or this is the savior of the world, the one they've been waiting their entire history for.”

#FeastInTheMess
“Instead, in the midst of my mess, in the midst of your mess, credit card debt, your gossip, your anger, your lust, your doubt, your unkindness, your sloth, your scrolling. He cooks your favorite foods. He brings out the best tablecloth and napkins and silver. He fills your cup to overflowing, and he says, let's feast together, you and me.”

#KingdomOfNow
“This most amazing promise is that God prepares this feast for us in the present. Not when the enemies are dead, but in the present, in their presence, before we're perfect, before we're victorious just as we are. Praise God. This is the kingdom of God that Jesus was proclaiming, the already and the not yet, the kingdom of the now and the forever.”

#ProvisionNotProsperity
“Notice that David says God as our shepherd gives provision, not necessarily prosperity. Psalm 23 is not an example of the health and wealth gospel, a name it and claim it mantra. All that I need means all my essential needs are being met, and that is fully enough to experience contentment with my shepherd. After all, I'm a sheep, man.”

#PresenceInTheValley
“It's interesting. Did you notice that David changes his pronouns in this verse when he talks about God? He was earlier talking about all the things that God did, and suddenly, he begins speaking directly to God. You are close beside me. Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid for you are close beside me. The longer I follow Jesus, the more convinced I am that this is the greatest blessing of all.”

#FocusYourAttentionOnJesus
“Economists say that we've moved into the age of the attention economy. Our attention is the commodity that everyone is vying for. We are the product that our smartphones, our social media feeds, our cable news channels are selling to advertisers and politicians. Our attention is what everyone wants. So in the midst of this bidding frenzy, how do we focus our attention on the good shepherd, on Jesus, so we can listen to his voice?”

#IHaveAllThatINeed
“I spent some time last week here in the sanctuary kneeling in front of the cross and repeating these words, the Lord is my shepherd. I have all that I need. I have all that I need. There may be things in my life that I wish were different. There may be wants and desires that are currently unmet. But because God is my shepherd, I have all that I need. This first verse of Psalm 23 reminds us that God promises us provision.”
