Micah 5 sets Judah’s coming humiliation beside God’s promise of a coming Shepherd King. The judgment on Judah’s king points to the shame and devastation that came through Babylon, when Zedekiah’s rebellion ended in defeat, captivity, and disgrace. God’s judgment, however, does not cancel God’s promise. The same Old Testament that announces judgment also announces beforehand the redemption God would accomplish through His Son.
The Old Testament presents Christ in promise, prophecy, type, and shadow. Moses, the prophets, the law, and the Psalms all bear witness to Him. Jesus Himself opened the Scriptures on the road to Emmaus and showed His disciples the things concerning Himself, beginning with Moses and all the prophets. The gospel is not God’s second attempt after the first plan failed. God planned from the beginning to redeem His people through Jesus Christ.
Micah names Bethlehem Ephrathah as the place from which the ruler of Israel would come. Bethlehem, the city of bread, would become the birthplace of the Bread of Life. The promised ruler comes forth for God, carrying out the Father’s will rather than His own. Christ submits Himself fully to the Father, even in Gethsemane, where He says, “Not my will be done, but your will be done.” The Shepherd King is born in Bethlehem, yet His coming forth is from ancient days. Jesus did not begin in Bethlehem. He is eternal, fully God and fully man.
Micah’s King also stands and shepherds His flock in the strength of the Lord. Jesus is not merely a good shepherd among many. He is the Good Shepherd. He voluntarily and vicariously lays down His life for His sheep, knows them, calls them, feeds them, protects them, disciplines them, and binds them up when they are broken. The Shepherd King becomes the peace and security of His people. There is no peace apart from Christ and no lasting security apart from Christ.
Micah also shows that the Shepherd King gathers the scattered remnant and makes them a blessing among the nations, like dew and showers on the grass. Yet the King must remove everything that competes for His people’s trust. Horses, chariots, strongholds, sorceries, fortune tellers, carved images, and Asherah poles all picture false security, false counsel, and false worship. Christ alone is Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, and Prince of Peace. The gospel calls sinners to trust not in good works, church membership, wisdom, money, careers, or strength, but in Jesus Christ, the Savior King and Shepherd King.
Key Takeaways
- 1. The Old Testament points to Christ God did not hide His redemptive purpose until the New Testament. Promise, prophecy, type, and shadow all prepare the way for Christ. Jesus taught His own disciples to read Moses and the prophets as Scriptures that testify concerning Him. [37:19]
- 2. Jesus obeyed the Father completely The Shepherd King came forth for God and fulfilled the Father’s purpose. Christ did not pursue an independent mission or merely model religious devotion. His obedience reached all the way to the cup of judgment, where He submitted His will to the Father for the salvation of sinners. [49:23]
- 3. The Good Shepherd gives Himself Jesus lays down His life voluntarily, and He lays it down as a sacrifice for sin. His death was not an accident forced upon Him by circumstances. The Shepherd knows His sheep personally, calls them effectually, and provides the care no other shepherd can give. [55:18]
- 4. Christ alone provides peace and security Peace cannot be built on strength, money, influence, or favorable circumstances. The Shepherd King is the peace of His people because He has dealt with sin and delivers them from their enemies. Security grows where confidence rests in Christ rather than in what can disappear overnight. [1:00:03]
- 5. The Shepherd King destroys rival trusts Horses, chariots, sorceries, idols, and strongholds reveal the many ways hearts look for control apart from God. Christ does not merely add Himself to a life already ruled by false securities. He removes rival confidence so that His people may find their counsel, strength, worship, and identity in Him alone.
