The picture of sitting on the couch while the mind is somewhere else names a struggle that reaches into life with God. Deuteronomy 6 calls Israel to be fully present before the Lord as they stand on the edge of the promised land. Moses knows that the gift of homes, fields, comfort, and settled life can become more important than the God who gave it.
The word Shema means more than hearing words. Shema means listen, pay attention, be fully present, and be ready to respond. Moses begins with the Lord who rescued Israel from Egypt, led them through the wilderness, and provided for them all along the way. The command to love God comes from the God who has already been faithful.
The word all keeps showing up because God is not asking for a little religious corner of life. The heart includes thoughts, feelings, desires, and the things that lead a person to choose and act. The soul, or nefesh, means the whole living, breathing self. The strength, or “muchness,” means everything a person has got: abilities, energy, resources, opportunities, and all the rest.
The contrast between worship and compartmentalized life exposes how easily attention gets scattered. Success, family, comfort, control, money, and approval can all be good gifts that become gods when they carry the weight of identity, peace, and worth. Luther’s words cut straight through it: whatever the heart clings to and relies on, that is its god. Created things cannot give what only the Creator can give.
Christ stands at the center of this brokenness as the One who loves the Father completely where human hearts do not. Jesus remains fully present in Gethsemane when His closest friends cannot stay awake for even one hour. Jesus gives His heart, soul, and all His muchness at the cross for people who have given themselves to everything else. God gives His all in Christ, not because human beings finally pay enough attention, but because that is who God is.
The Spirit now brings this grace into everyday ordinary life. Worship continues at the breakfast table, in traffic, at work, in meetings, while packing lunches, changing diapers, forgiving loved ones, and actually listening to the person nearby. The simple prayer becomes, “Holy Spirit, help me pay attention.” God has already found His people, is already with them, and calls their whole life into response.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Shema calls for present attention [36:14] Shema is not passive hearing or religious background noise. God calls for hearts that are awake, engaged, and ready to respond to His voice. Presence before God begins by remembering who is speaking: the Lord who rescues, leads, and provides. [36:14]
- 2. God wants all of life [39:44] The word “all” leaves no untouched corner where God is merely a visitor. Heart, soul, and muchness include thoughts, desires, energy, resources, and ordinary responsibilities. Love for God is not a sliver of life but the life beneath every other part. [39:44]
- 3. Good gifts can become gods [47:43] Success, family, comfort, and control become idols when they are asked to make a person whole. Attention slowly shapes affection, and affection eventually builds a life around something. Created things always break under the weight of giving what only God can give. [47:43]
- 4. Christ gives what humanity cannot [51:21] Jesus remains present, obedient, and fully surrendered when human love fails and wanders. Christ gives Himself completely for people whose hearts are divided in a thousand directions. Grace begins not with finally loving God enough, but with receiving the God who has already given His all. [51:21]
- 5. Worship continues in ordinary moments [56:25] The Spirit carries God’s presence into coffee, commutes, conversations, work, and care for neighbors. Everyday life becomes worship when God’s goodness is received and shared in the places already given. God does not need to be found somewhere else because He has already drawn near.
