Serving Our Neighbors: Beds, Shelters, and Hope

The church is more than the building where people gather. The church is a movement sent into the world to be the hands and feet of Jesus, loving God and one another by serving people nearby and far away. God has already worked through one body as people have prayed, given money, packed kits, served meals, built beds, donated blood, made blankets, and answered needs that cannot be ignored.

Romans 12 names grace as the source of different gifts. Paul calls serving to be done well, encouragement to be real encouragement, giving to be generous, kindness to be glad, and hospitality to be ready. The call to mission does not rest on a few organizers; it belongs to every person whose time, resources, and talents can become comfort, dignity, and hope for somebody else.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace puts that call into very practical work. The beds, bedding, and handmade blankets mean that children ages three through seventeen do not have to sleep on the floor. The hands that sand boards, drill holes, hammer frames, stain wood, and brand headboards become hands that say a child matters.
