Sunday Worship: Pastor Sharon Lee's First Sunday

Genesis places Jacob on the road to Haran, not on a spiritual retreat, not in a place he picked because it felt holy, but in the place where darkness caught up with him. Jacob is running from a fractured family, from deception, from Esau’s threat, and from a future that is anything but clear. The stone beneath his head is ordinary, hard, and unremarkable. The place does not look sacred. It looks like a stopping point on a long, uncertain road.

God meets Jacob there. While Jacob sleeps, God begins to speak, and the first words are not instructions. God gives a promise: “I am with you.” God continues with promise after promise: “I will keep you. I will bring you back. I will not leave you.” The question Jacob might have wanted answered was, “What comes next?” But God does not begin with a map. God begins with companionship.

Genesis quietly shifts attention from Jacob’s dream to God’s faithfulness. The staircase and the angels draw the eye, but the heart of the story is God already present in a place Jacob did not recognize. Faith does not begin when everything finally makes sense. Faith begins with the discovery that God has been there, quietly faithful, even while the road still looked confusing and the circumstances remained unresolved.

Jacob wakes up with the same stone beneath his head and the same road ahead of him. Nothing has been fixed overnight. Yet something has changed. Jacob says, “Surely, the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.” Those words are honest and vulnerable. Jacob is not saying God just arrived. Jacob is confessing that his eyes have opened to the presence that was already there.

Bethel becomes holy not because it looked different at first, but because Jacob finally recognized what had been true all along. Earth is “so thick with divine possibilities” that ordinary places may turn out to be altars. Listening becomes one way the church begins to notice where God has already been at work. The prayer is not simply, “Lord, come and be with us,” but, “Lord, open eyes to the grace that has already gone before.”
