Sharing Truth in a Searching World: Acts 17

People are searching for meaning, even when life looks full, busy, educated, connected, and successful. The world keeps chasing the next new thing, but money cannot buy what the soul needs, pleasure cannot satisfy it, and success cannot provide it. Paul finds that same searching world in Athens, surrounded by philosophers, idols, debates, and people who thought they already had all the answers.

Paul does not come into Athens calling people fools or trying to win an argument. Paul looks, listens, observes, and learns before he speaks. The altar “to an unknown god” gives Paul a place to begin, because it exposes the deep problem in a loving and gentle way. The Athenians know many things, but they do not know the one true God they desperately need for all eternity.

Paul meets people right where they are, but Paul never compromises the gospel to do it. Paul connects with their poets and their language, then helps them see that “in him we live and move and have our being.” God is not something mankind creates, controls, carries around, or places on a shelf. God is the living Creator, the giver of breath, the giver of life, and the giver of purpose.

God makes clear that no person is an accident or the result of some cosmic mistake. God knows the days of every life, and God plants His people in homes, workplaces, friendships, neighborhoods, and communities for a purpose. The call is not to become a professional debater with every answer memorized. The call is to become a faithful witness, ready to give a reason for the hope found in Jesus Christ with courage, clarity, gentleness, and respect.

Paul finally brings the truth home: the times of ignorance are over. God has revealed Himself through creation, His Word, changed lives, and most importantly through Jesus Christ, the risen Savior. Repentance is necessary because judgment is coming, Christ has conquered death, and every person must choose a response.

Paul’s audience gives three different responses. Some mock. Some want to hear more. Some believe. God does not call His people to control the outcome, but God does call them to plant the seed. The risen Savior must remain at the center, because the gospel is only good news if it gets there in time.
