Bible ReadingNehemiah 6Verse 1: When word came to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab and the rest of our enemies that I had rebuilt the wall and not a gap was left in it—though up to that time I had not set the doors in the gates—
[07:06]Verse 2: Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message: “Come, let us meet together in one of the villages on the plain of Ono.” But they were scheming to harm me.
[07:25]Verse 3: So I sent messengers to them with this reply: “I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?”
[07:40]Verse 4: Four times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave them the same answer.
[07:49]Verse 5: Then, the fifth time, Sanballat sent his aide to me with the same message, and in his hand was an unsealed letter.
[11:39]Verse 6: In it was written: “It is reported among the nations—and Geshem says it is true—that you and the Jews are plotting to revolt, and therefore you are building the wall. Moreover, according to these reports you are about to become their king.”
[12:49]Verse 7: “You have even appointed prophets to make this proclamation about you in Jerusalem: ‘There is a king in Judah!’ Now this report will get back to the king; so come, let us meet together.”
[13:01]Verse 8: I sent him this reply: “Nothing like what you are saying is happening; you are just making it up out of your head.”
[13:18]Verse 9: They were all trying to frighten us, thinking, “Their hands will get too weak for the work, and it will not be completed.” But I prayed, “Now strengthen my hands.”
[13:27]Verse 10: One day I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home. He said, “Let us meet in the house of God, inside the temple, and let us close the temple doors, because men are coming to kill you—by night they are coming to kill you.”
[26:19]Verse 11: But I said, “Should a man like me run away? Or should someone like me go into the temple to save his life? I will not go!”
[26:35]Verse 12: I realized that God had not sent him, but that he had prophesied against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
[26:37]Verse 13: He had been hired to intimidate me so that I would commit a sin by doing this, and then they would give me a bad name to discredit me.
[26:51]Verse 14: Remember Tobiah and Sanballat, my God, because of what they have done; remember also the prophet Noadiah and how she and the rest of the prophets have been trying to intimidate me.
[33:26]Verse 15: So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two days.
[33:40]John 17Verse 1: After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.”
Verse 2: “For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.”
Verse 3: “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”
Verse 4: “I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.”
Verse 5: “And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.”
Verse 6: “I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word.”
Verse 7: “Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you.”
Verse 8: “For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me.”
Verse 9: “I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours.”
Verse 10: “All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them.”
Verse 11: “I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one.”
Verse 12: “While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.”
Verse 13: “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them.”
Verse 14: “I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.”
Verse 15: “My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.”
Verse 16: “They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.”
Verse 17: “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.”
Verse 18: “As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.”
Verse 19: “For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.”
Verse 20: “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message,”
Verse 21: “That all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”
Verse 22: “I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one—”
Verse 23: “I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”
[04:11]Verse 24: “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.”
Verse 25: “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me.”
Verse 26: “I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”
Observation questions- What are the three different approaches Nehemiah’s enemies use in this chapter to stop the work: the invitation to Ono, the unsealed letter, and the message from Shemaiah?
- What specific reasons does Nehemiah give for refusing to leave the wall and meet his enemies? [07:40]
- According to Nehemiah 6:9, what did the enemies hope fear would do to the people’s hands and to the work itself?
- What made Shemaiah’s invitation into the temple sound safe and spiritual, and what did Nehemiah recognize about it? [27:12]
Interpretation questions- Nehemiah’s enemies first offer him something that may have looked harmless—a meeting. Why can good or normal parts of life become distractions from God’s mission, even when they are not sinful? [08:50]
- Nehemiah answers false rumors plainly, then prays, “Now strengthen my hands.” What does this show about responding to discouragement without pretending that fear is not real? [14:16]
- Why would entering the temple have been sinful for Nehemiah, even though he was being told it would protect his life? What does his response teach about obeying God when disobedience is made to sound reasonable? [27:29]
- Jesus prays that His people would remain in the world while being protected from the evil one. How does that prayer help believers understand why following Jesus can be difficult during everyday life, not only during church gatherings?
Application questions- What tends to pull your attention away from being aware of God’s presence during a normal week—work, school, a crowded schedule, technology, relationships, or something else? What might it look like to remain present with God in that specific setting? [09:09]
- Is there a “come down from the wall” invitation in your life right now—something that is not necessarily bad but is pulling you away from a commitment God has put in front of you? How can Nehemiah’s answer shape your response? [07:40]
- When you take a step toward serving, gathering with believers, reading Scripture, or praying, what discouraging thoughts usually show up? How could Nehemiah’s short prayer become a prayer you use this week? [13:27]
- Think about a recent changed plan or disappointment. Instead of only asking why it did not work out, where might God be growing patience, self-control, faithfulness, or generosity in you? [25:12]
- Are there any small spiritual practices you have started treating as unimportant—gathering with the church, connecting in a group, serving, reading Scripture, or praying? Which one small, realistic step would help you resist the lie that it does not matter? [28:50]
- Nehemiah did not complete the wall alone; the people stayed focused and worked together. Where do you need other believers to help you stay focused on Jesus, and how can you take a step toward that kind of connection? #!!33:01!!
