This huddle time prepares us to step onto the field with confidence, knowing our role in God’s kingdom work. Without clear direction, we risk running aimlessly. Every play starts with listening. The picture of a huddle gives the church a plain way to think about gathering together. A team huddles for instructions, for celebration, for pain, for disappointment, and for unity. A huddle can remind everybody, “Hey. This thing is not being done alone. There are responsibilities. Fulfill the responsibility, and the team will be okay.” That same picture gives shape to the church when people come in needing direction, needing to celebrate, needing comfort, needing healing, or needing to stand together with folks from different backgrounds.

Acts 1 shows Jesus huddling his followers before sending them out. Jesus tells them not to leave Jerusalem yet, but to wait for the Father’s promise. The Holy Spirit will come on them, and they will receive power. That power is not given just to feel something; that power is given so they will be witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

The mission takes a clear shape in leading others to become healthy, growing, multiplying followers of Jesus. The key starts with becoming followers of Jesus. Healthy things grow, and growing things multiply, but the beginning is surrendering to Jesus as Lord and following him closely. The old picture of being “covered in the dust of your rabbi” gives that idea some weight. A follower walks so close behind the rabbi that his dust gets on them.

The Romans Road gives simple words for carrying the gospel. Romans 3:23 says all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 6:23 says the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus the Lord. Romans 5:8 says God proves his love in that while sinners were still sinners, Christ died for them. Romans 10:9 and 10 says confession that Jesus is Lord and belief that God raised him from the dead results in salvation.

The gospel must not be reduced to people being “mistakers.” Mistakes need a teacher, and Jesus is a teacher. Sin needs a Savior, and Jesus is more than a good teacher. Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the living God, the one who died and rose again.

The next steps are plain and practical. A follower of Jesus can tell the story of confessing Jesus as Messiah. A follower of Jesus can invite someone to come serve and grow with the body. A follower of Jesus can ask a neighbor, coworker, or friend, “Is there anything I can pray for you about?”

Know we're doing that in here, but even once we leave here, it doesn't have to be somebody different. It it can be a family member. It can be somebody that already knows your story, but you're just retelling your story because I want you to hear yourself tell your story.
