Jesus talking now in Mark 10 45 the son of man came not to be served does that sound familiar compare it to acts 17 25 God is not served by human hands Paul said in Acts 17 25 Jesus says the son of man Son of God incarnate as son of man why did he come this is the heart of the Christian message why is there a Christianity why is there a Christ a Christ why did God send his son to become incarnate in human flesh and the answer of Jesus is not to be served. [00:00:39]

The gospel is not a help wanted sign it's a help available sign of man came not for you to serve him this is a glorious verse a great great teaching I think it's Crystal Clear why then did he come and why is there a Christianity in the second half of the verse can read it for yourself he came to serve you now I know this could become Blasphemous couldn't it Jesus is my servant do this Jesus do that Jesus serve me God is willing to risk blasphemy to get the truth across to you. [00:03:33]

The greatest need you have this morning and the greatest need I have this morning is not for obedient children and that they'd come home it's not to fix the marriage as painful as it may be it's not health in spite of cancer it's not a good job it's not a longer vacation the greatest need that you and I have in this room right now is for somebody to die for us to give his life as a ransom for us which is what this verse says Jesus came to do he didn't come to piddle around he went right to the core need that you and I have. [00:04:43]

My conscience Bears me witness that if I don't have a ransom if I don't have somebody to die in my place I'm going to be condemned you know by whom first and foremost I'm a conscience my conscience I get a funny feeling in my left armpit you know my first thought is what I do wrong what'd I do wrong why would that be my first question because I do a lot of wrong things a lot of bad attitudes a lot of feelings that just crop up where'd that come from I don't need God to tell me I'm in trouble my conscience is just fine thank you. [00:05:48]

We are rebels in our Wills God has not been loved and honored and trusted we all know this I haven't loved God the way he demands to be loved I haven't trusted him every day of my life he hasn't been my treasure I've treasured things and cars and new computer programs and my wife and my five kids I've treasured those things way out of proportion to the way I should treasure god I know that and I've massively therefore offended God and he's just to be displeased with me and in his Holiness and righteousness and Justice to disapprove of me in that kind of behavior. [00:08:19]

The incredibly good news is that God is so self-sufficient that he doesn't need me he will be my need meter he exalts his fullness by filling up my emptiness and so the issue boils down to receiving and it's just too good to be true the issue of getting right with God how do you get right with the creator of the universe so that when you come to die you'll have peace and the answer is it's an issue of receiving not serving it's an issue of receiving service the son of man came not to be served but to serve so our role is receive receive believe. [00:11:42]

The Christian life is getting up in the morning and saying in your heart Jesus you are my savior you are my king you are my friend you are my guide you are my protection you are my Advocate you are my joy You Are My Hope and so I today fresh receive this and I cast myself today afresh on you for you to be all those things for me as I go down to breakfast and as I get in my car and drive and as I sit before my computer or as I stand over my patients or as I mortar my bricks or Hammer my nails or shuffle my papers or teach my class. [00:13:49]

Unless you today come and serve me that is worked on my will and my mind so that the Rebellion is subdued and so that light replaces Darkness so that my muscles and my whole body join in your way joyfully that I'm a goner and I'll wind up working for you or hating you before this day is over the Christian Life is a mystery folks I'm just learning it at age 52 been a Christian 46 years since I prayed to receive Jesus at my mother's knee I feel like I'm learning about the mystery of living by being served. [00:15:06]

The good news this morning is that we can't serve God but that he serves us he pursues us with goodness and mercy he works everything together for our good as we trust in him and love him he never leaves us or forsakes us so that we can confidently say the Lord is my helper I will not fear what can man do to me. [00:17:27]

There is a yoke to be carried in the Christian Life the Yoke of obedience to Jesus but it is light and it is easy because he carries it he carries it I once preached a sermon 17 years ago one of the first sermons I ever preached at Bethlehem and I pictured this text that I just quoted from Matthew 11. as me as an oxen and a yoke fit over me and two handles of a plow attached to the Yoke and Jesus as the one who has his hands on the plow and the plow is the meaning of my life cutting through the Earth and I'm hooked up and Jesus Takes the handles of the plow with this 800 pound ox in the Yoke and he says all right let's plow and with the twist of his wrist he goes and lifts me off the ground and goes that's the Christian Life to me if I don't have a Jesus like that I'm done for. [00:18:53]

I pray that as we draw this service to a close and respond to you that you would come and show us yourself I've done the best I could and I believe that you have been serving me and Us in this last a little bit of time and now I pray that you would bring this service to a great climax of faith and Love and Hope and joy and that you would make yourself King and friend and guide and protection and treasure and joy in the lives of everybody in this room in Your Name Lord Jesus I pray amen.
