Luke’s purpose is that Theophilus may know the exact truth of the things he has been taught, the things “most surely believed among us.” Luke presents more than a biography of a poor carpenter’s son from Nazareth. Luke presents Jesus Christ, the Son of God, with an account that is accurate, orderly, and grounded in what Jesus did and said.
The claims of skeptics cannot stand simply by saying that Jesus left no mark on history. Josephus speaks of the Christ, Tacitus records that Christus was executed under Pontius Pilate, and archaeology continues to show Luke’s accuracy in names, places, and geography. Luke’s reliability in the details gives no reason to dismiss his witness concerning the Son of God.
Jesus allows no safe middle ground. Jesus is either the Son of God or He is a liar and deceiver, just as the Pharisees charged. Jesus cannot merely be reduced to a good man, a prophet, or a created being, because John declares that “the Word was God” and that the Word became flesh.
Jesus shows no identity crisis anywhere in Scripture. Jesus speaks at twelve years old of being about His Father’s business, tells the Samaritan woman, “I who speak to you am He,” and tells the man born blind that the Son of God is the one speaking with him. Christ receives that man’s worship, and Christ prays for the glory He had with the Father before the world was.
Prophecy supplies another clear testimony. Isaiah speaks of the virgin birth, Micah identifies Bethlehem, Zechariah describes the King coming lowly on a donkey, and Zechariah also names the thirty pieces of silver cast to the potter. Scripture does not offer coincidence after coincidence. Scripture gives God-breathed witness that reaches from Christ’s birth to His betrayal, death, burial, and resurrection.
John states the purpose of Christ’s signs plainly: they were written so that people may believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and have life in His name. Christ’s miracles, authority over nature, power over death, forgiveness of sins, and unmatched words bear witness that the Father sent Him. Jesus remains the only way to the Father, and faith in Him must move beyond agreement into confession, repentance, baptism, and reconciliation with God.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Jesus leaves no middle ground. Jesus claims divine identity in words that cannot be softened into mere moral advice. The Pharisees understood that claim and rejected Him as a deceiver because they would not receive Him as Lord. Faith must reckon honestly with Christ as either exactly who He says He is or not worthy of any allegiance at all. [39:15]
- 2. Christ knew His eternal identity. Jesus speaks of the Father’s business at twelve, reveals Himself as Messiah, and claims glory with the Father before the world existed. Christ does not discover His mission gradually or struggle to determine who He is. His certainty becomes the foundation for trusting His authority over sin, death, and salvation. [45:20]
- 3. Prophecy reveals God’s deliberate purpose. Scripture names details that no human planning could arrange across centuries, from Bethlehem to the price of betrayal. Prophecy shows that Christ’s coming was not an accident in history but the unfolding purpose of God. Faith rests on a revealed pattern in which God prepared the way and then fulfilled His own word. [54:27]
- 4. Christ’s works bear the Father’s witness. Jesus heals the blind, frees the oppressed, raises the dead, and exercises authority that belongs to God. Christ’s signs are not displays meant merely to amaze; they identify Him as the One sent by the Father. Belief sees in those works the call to worship, like the man born blind who said, “Lord, I believe.” [57:46]
- 5. Belief must move sinners to action. The gospel pricks hearts because Christ’s identity carries eternal consequences. The Ethiopian eunuch hears Christ from Isaiah, confesses Him as God’s Son, and responds in baptism. Genuine belief receives Christ’s authority rather than admiring His words from a distance.
