Jesus sends His disciples out as “sheep in the midst of wolves,” and that picture should kill any idea that being sent by Christ makes somebody higher than everybody else. The sheep are vulnerable, dependent, and unable to protect themselves, yet Christ sends them right into hostile places to reach other lost sheep. The mission is not about wearing a Christ badge, carrying a faith mug, or saying, “I got faith,” with no movement behind it. Christ continues His work through people who actually go.
Discernment becomes necessary because boldness by itself can get foolish real quick. Jesus does not call His people to be manipulative snakes or gullible doves. Jesus calls them to be wise as serpents, prudent and aware of danger, while remaining innocent as doves, transparent in motive and pure in conduct. Discernment is not judgmental pride. Discernment is seeing what is actually in front of them and asking the Spirit for clarity about how to move.
Resistance also cannot be treated as failure. The wolves may show up in workplaces, schools, neighborhoods, families, churches, courts, and places that should have felt safe. Jesus warns that opposition will come even from religious communities, which means a hard response to the gospel does not automatically mean somebody has missed the mission. The call is not to pick fights, perform persecution for attention, or turn every inconvenience into a hashtag. The call is to remain faithful, wise, and innocent in the middle of real resistance.
Faith must be grounded because spiritual maturity does not happen on the sidelines or only in theory. Jesus sends the disciples with little earthly security so that they learn dependence on God before larger trials come. The Holy Spirit gives words, direction, purpose, and strength when Christ’s people stand before opposition. Confidence cannot rest in personality, education, speaking ability, or a five-point strategy. Confidence rests in God’s provision.
Stephen shows what this looks like when the outcome is not earthly deliverance. The Spirit gives Stephen bold words before the court, and Stephen’s death becomes a seed that God uses in Saul’s later transformation into Paul. Christ does not promise favorable outcomes by worldly standards, but He does promise His presence and His purposes. Discernment without faith becomes fear, and faith without discernment becomes presumption. Together, they form the posture of a mature disciple: eyes open, heart anchored, speech gentle, and steps bold in Christ’s strength.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Sheep do not become wolves Christ sends vulnerable people into hard places, not because they are naturally tough, but because He is their protector. The sheep image removes spiritual swagger and replaces it with dependence. Christian witness cannot become faithful by copying the violence, manipulation, or hunger for control found among the wolves. [49:34]
- 2. Wisdom and innocence belong together Wisdom sees danger, reads the room, and refuses to walk blindly into manipulation. Innocence keeps wisdom from becoming self-serving, dishonest, or hard-hearted. Christ calls for both because gullibility can be exploited, while manipulation can destroy the integrity of witness. [52:52]
- 3. Resistance is not always failure Opposition to faith can be an expected part of being sent into a broken world. Resistance should not produce a victim mentality, social-media performance, or a desire to fight everybody. Christ calls His people to see difficult moments as opportunities for Spirit-led faithfulness. [58:20]
- 4. The Spirit supplies needed words The pressure of witness does not rest on personal eloquence, training, or confidence. The Spirit of the Father speaks through Christ’s people when they are called to stand firm. God’s provision makes faithful obedience possible even when the path and outcome remain unclear. [1:07:34]
- 5. Faithfulness can outlive painful outcomes Stephen’s death looked tragic, but God used it as part of Saul’s road toward becoming Paul. Faithfulness is never measured only by immediate success, comfort, or visible victory. Christ can turn painful obedience into a seed that bears fruit far beyond what anybody can see in the moment.
