The early church faced growing pains when feeding widows became a crisis. Rather than micromanage, the apostles released control by appointing spirit-filled servants to handle practical needs. This freed them to focus on prayer and teaching – the engine of discipleship. Churches today still stumble when leaders cling to tasks God meant others to carry. True multiplication happens when we trust others with the work. [42:12]
Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. (Acts 6:2-4, KJV)
Reflection: What practical responsibility are you clinging to that God might be asking you to entrust to another qualified believer? How could releasing control create space for your primary calling?
Like a naval ship’s chief’s mess, deacons form the backbone of church operations. These seasoned leaders handle vital behind-the-scenes work so pastors can focus on spiritual priorities. The analogy reminds us that healthy churches run on mutual respect between leadership tiers – not hierarchical control. When deacons and pastors work as allies, the whole body thrives. [44:18]
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ. (Ephesians 4:11-12, KJV)
Reflection: Where have you seen effective teamwork between spiritual and practical leaders? What attitudes hinder you from fully trusting others’ roles in God’s work?
Appointing seven servants didn’t just solve a food crisis – it sparked explosive growth. When the apostles stopped doing everyone’s job, the word spread like wildfire and priests began converting. This pattern remains: churches multiply when members carry burdens together. Control stifles, but shared responsibility creates space for God’s power to move. [40:52]
And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith. (Acts 6:7, KJV)
Reflection: What ministry need in your church currently lacks enough hands? How could volunteering or empowering others unleash new growth?
The apostles demanded more than administrative skill from table servers. Deacons needed the Holy Spirit’s fullness and godly wisdom – the same requirements as preachers. This reveals a truth: every church role is spiritual work. From budgeting to building repairs, Kingdom tasks require leaders sensitive to God’s voice and ways. [39:02]
Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain. They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless. (1 Timothy 3:8-10, ESV)
Reflection: Have you ever minimized “practical” church roles as less spiritual? What qualities in a deacon would most encourage your walk with Christ?
Trying to “clean” people through criticism often does more harm than good. Like a fisherman gutting his catch, human efforts to fix others usually leave wounds. True transformation comes when we let the Spirit convict while we disciple. Leaders focus on teaching truth, trusting God to handle heart surgery. [55:24]
And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment. (John 16:8, ESV)
Reflection: When has someone’s attempt to “fix” you damaged relationship? How can you better partner with the Spirit’s work in someone’s life today?
Acts 6 multiplies disciples and then exposes a crack: neglected widows and rising murmurs. The apostles answer the problem by clarifying lanes. The text says it is not fitting to leave the word of God to serve tables, so seven are sought who are “of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom.” That call names the office without needing the title. The verb says it plainly: wait tables, minister the daily things, so the Word and prayer stay central. The apostles refuse to fingerprint everything. God sets order so gifts can work like they were given to work.
Ephesians 4 confirms the pattern. Christ gives apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body. That aim runs toward unity in the faith and maturity that is not tossed to and fro by slick doctrine. Deacons are charged to help make room for that by protecting time for prayer, study, and listening to the Spirit, lifting the body rather than fracturing it.
The appointment in Acts 6 does not chase popularity or control. The charge is to choose from among the disciples, not just members, men whose lives already tell the truth of the Spirit’s filling and wisdom. Friendship picks and controllable picks turn toxic. Spirit picks turn fruitful. Hands are laid, prayers are prayed, and then the word of God increases and disciples multiply again. That is order, then overflow.
The picture lands hard on leadership. Real leadership mentors and multiplies. Lone-ranger control suffocates teams. The deacon body is like a chief’s mess on a ship, doing the bulk of the work, giving sound counsel, keeping people moving in the right direction. Training matters. Correction matters. But cleaning people is not the church’s job. The Holy Spirit convicts, converts, and cleans; the church receives people at the foot of the cross and disciples them with patience and truth.
The text also draws a bright line around identity. There are only two kinds of people in Scripture’s frame: in Christ or out of Christ. So the doors stay open to every walk of life, but the standard stays God’s. Leaders speak to mountains in faith, not to flex power, but to lift the body, protect unity, and make space for the gospel to run. When the house is in order, God multiplies. Stephen and Philip stand as proof that when deacons are chosen God’s way, preachers and evangelists are hiding in that seven.
You wanna make a good leader? You want a good leader growing up under you? You want a good team? You need to train them. If there's no training, you're not gonna have a good team. These people that wanna come in here and be Sunday morning quarterbacks and they wanna hit me on Sunday, and then on Monday, they wanna call me and tell me or go on Facebook and say how bad all life is. The reason it's bad is because you're not in the book and you've not done any training because I'm gonna tell you something. If god's in charge of your life, you can speak to that mountain and tell it to move.

Now look here. It didn't say anything about let's go to the church and let them pick seven people. Vote on seven people did it. It told the disciples, they told the disciples, you go out and you choose seven men. Is that what the bible says? Come on. Amen. Does it say that? Amen. Seven men full of honest, that are that are honest report, full of the holy ghost, wisdom whom we may appoint over the business. You choose them.

I could do it Southern Baptist style. That means there's one preacher, everybody else lay down. Amen? But I'm gonna tell you something. That's not real leadership. Some of you that are in the military, listen up. You wanna you wanna be seen? Learn to lead. People tell me, well, it's lonely at the top. Let me tell you something. It's only lonely in the position that you are if you're not mentoring somebody and bringing somebody along with you.

When you have a leader that has to do everything himself, when you have a leader that all they want to do, they have to make the final decision, they have to make the only decision, and they don't give a team the respect allowing them to do the picking. They missed the boat. People say, pastor, you need to be more forceful. Let me tell you something. There are some people in here that they think they run the church and there's nothing I can do about that. That's not between me and them. That's between them and the holy spirit of god.

Be careful of always picking your friends because I'm gonna tell you a little secret. They're your friends today and your enemies tomorrow if you're not careful. It said men of good report, men that were full of the holy ghost, men men that that were full of wisdom. And part of men being that way is being able to be, and this is the toughest part of a pastor, is to be able to be the pastor and a friend to somebody in the church that you serve.

But the the apostles went on in verse four and said, but we will give ourselves continuously to prayer and to the ministry of the word. Why? Because when we do that, when we're praying, when the pastors of the church are praying like they ought, things come up, but let me tell you what happens is when you are praying and praying and talking to an issue like the Bible says, if there's a mountain in your way, tell it to move, but you gotta talk to that mountain.

It's not talking about a physical mountain y'all. That's talking about a mountain of problems. We got as Christians, we have the ability to talk to that mountain and it'll move if we have the faith. Part as a leader, as a pastor, as a teacher, and as evangelist, we need to understand today that there are times when we need to be in the right mindset so we can talk to the issue so it lifts the body up and doesn't take the body out.

Mama Nancy, when I see people in the church referring to us and them that are in the church. There's no us and them. Let me tell you a little secret about a church and about a world out there. There are only two kinds of people. I know this is gonna make some of you upset, but there's only two kinds of people I see in the bible. Those that are in Christ and those that are out of Christ.
