Proverbs is not a book of promises but it's a book of principles for example um taking a proverb from chapter 22 it says start children off on the way they should go and even when they are old they will not turn from it obviously raising children in church gives them um a great opportunity to learn about Jesus and it means that they're much more likely to accept him for themselves but it's not a guarantee or a promise and Proverbs is actually only one of the wisdom books in the Bible um job and Ecclesiastes or two others and they kind of tell the exception to the rule if you like where life is going wrong in every sense that it possibly can even though you love God and follow him and live by his word and they kind of teach us about how to make that reconciliation so principles not promises but that does not mean that Proverbs are not the Divine word of God. [00:04:09]

But when we're reading from The Book of Proverbs we're not reading good advice we are reading God's word his invitation to us to learn and get wisdom for ourselves so let's turn to Proverbs chapter 3 and read together together my son do not forget my teaching but keep my commands in your heart for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity let love and faithfulness never leave you bind them round your neck write them on the tablet of your heart then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding in all your ways submit to him and he will make your path straight. [00:05:43]

Blessed are those who find wisdom those who gain understanding for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold she is more precious than rubies nothing you desire can compare with her long life is in her right hand in her left hand are riches and honor her ways are Pleasant ways and all her paths are peace she is a tree of life to those who take hold of her those who hold her fast will be blessed. [00:07:01]

So why should we seek wisdom when we live in a world that does not Solomon's son probably was asking a very similar question can you just imagine a teenage son being called over by his dad to listen to one of 10 speeches he's probably rolling his eyes and dragging his feet but that's probably not just because he was young and thought he knew best they were living in Israel among the people of God you would think that everyone would be seeking wisdom but instead Israel has turned away from God they are worshiping false idols and really just listening to the wisdom of the world rather than God and so it's in this context that Solomon is so desperate for his son to seek wisdom he knows he's going to need wisdom to lead Israel well and to be a good King. [00:07:32]

Our culture is not really a fan of discipline or dedication or working hard when you can't reap rewards straight away instead it's all about instant gratification and following your heart or your truth but the sad thing is is that even in the church we don't always prize wisdom the way we should a few months ago I went on a day's training with Mick Taylor who some of you will remember he was the teaching Pastor here before Andrew and um there was a group of us and he taught us about the three main ways that people meet with God most naturally. [00:08:36]

He talks about um people who really love the Bible who um the word kind of is what really makes them come into God's presence and then he talks about prophetic people who most easily meet with God when they are in worship and in prayer and then he talks about wisdom people they um observe the world and they see God at work in his Creation in people's lives and that helps them to meet with God and they often have the gift of discernment and they can judge between right and wrong in situations. [00:09:16]

Mick was really just teaching us about kind of the way people are most naturally able to meet with God and then he gave us a challenge by saying that in the church wisdom people are often looked down on because their gift is seen as being much less spiritual it's not really in touch with God's word or his Spirit but that's not true when we read Proverbs it teaches us that wisdom is a really good Godly gift and that we should seek it because it's a spiritual value that God invites us actually all of us to um to seek and to use um to inform our lives every day. [00:10:12]

When I Was preparing for this preach I read over the first nine chapters of Proverbs quite a few times and I kept noticing that the words ways and paths are repeated over and over and over again I counted them because that seemed like quite a preacher thing to do and um the word ways is repeated 27 times and paths 20 times they are most sort of concentrated in Chapter 2 which is where Solomon almost sets up this contrast that I want to draw out today about the way of wisdom and the way of Darkness. [00:11:24]

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding in all your ways submit to him and he will make your path straight this verse tells us both um how to get wisdom and why we should seek it at all so how um by trusting God in everything why because God will lead you and make your path straight it sounds pretty simple but this verse is often misused I've actually had it kind of given to me an encouragement quite a lot of times and people would say to me you know if you trust God then you'll know exactly what to do or it will be really clear and you you'll see exactly what your next step is but sometimes that is not how God operates sometimes he really leads us around about way and it's only when we're looking back with hindsight that we can see his plan in that and that actually that was the straight path we just didn't know the destination. [00:12:31]

I think that sometimes we can be like that in our faith we we've navigated life this far and we've been all right and so we think well I know how to lead my family or I know how to conduct myself at work or I've been in this relationship for 5 years so I know what I'm doing but that means that we forget to rely on God we just put him in the drawer but that is not how God wants us to live our lives we need to rely on him every day and obviously he is so much better than an old Garmin satnav he's even better than a Google Maps satnav he is all knowing and he loves us so much and he knows what the straight path is for each and every one of us we just have to trust him that he will get us to The Next Step. [00:15:19]

Matthew Henry is talking about the way that God led the Israelites out of Egypt he appeared as a pillar of cloud in the daytime and a pillar of Fire by night and he led them out and into the promised land but he did not lead them the quickest or most direct way but because God is so um merciful and good he didn't waste all the time that the Israelites spent in the wilderness they were uh broken people who had spent Generations in slavery and God took them out of that situation and turned them into a nation that had laws and Covenants and strength and he knew that all of this needed to be established before Israel entered Canaan if they were going to function and prosper as a nation at all. [00:18:15]

When God leads People Into the Wilderness he doesn't ever leave them there he always leads them through in Revelation we see that Jesus is described as being robed in a cloud and that his legs were like fiery pillars Jesus was the one that led the Israelites into Canaan and he is the one that leads us today perhaps you feel like you're in the Wilderness at the moment and you're just wondering why it's taking so long for God to lead you out you have the opportunity to choose the path of wisdom and trust that God is beside you and that he will lead you out. [00:19:19]

In chapter three wisdom is personified as a woman she is desirable precious brings long life riches and honor we haven't read about lady Folly yet but she is a really big character in The Book of Proverbs she is the absolute opposite to Lady wisdom she's an adulterous she's bitter she leads people into death and on one level King Solomon is simp simply just instructing his son about the type of woman that would make a good wife and a good Queen and warning his son against adultery Solomon himself was the son of baath Sheba who is the woman that Queen David King David had an affair with um and so he has firsthand experience of this and he wants his son to be wise in the way that he conducts his own marriage but it's not just about that. [00:20:28]

Lady Folly as um an adulteress is also a picture of Israel in the Bible Israel is often talked about as a bride um who has turned to adultery because they um worship other gods they sacrifice to Idols they're not faithful in their Covenant with God and so lady Folly is depicted as kind of calling people away from their worship to God and she would do the same for us today at first she looks really appealing and beautiful like she um has much to offer us but very quickly you learn that actually everything she offers is empty on the other hand lady wisdom is um some well she bestows blessing and and long life she gives honor and favor and so Solomon is teaching us to listen to her call which leads us to worship God rather than the call of foolishness which would teach us to worship the world. [00:21:30]

When I Was preparing this message I just just kept thinking about the Tree of Life In the Garden of Eden um back in the first book of the Bible in Genesis we read about how God created the Earth and it says that he planted a garden and in the very center he planted these two trees the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil and it was this tree the tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil that was desirable for gaining wisdom and then Eve and Adam they ate from this tree because wanted to be wise and after kind of everything we've read about in Proverbs and that I've spoken about today you can almost look back at this story and think well why was it such a bad thing that they wanted wisdom. [00:23:02]

Adam and Eve choose in this moment to know what good and evil is for themselves rather than trusting in God because in the first chapters of Genesis when God creates the world he says that the things he has created are good and he says it five times he then makes Mankind and he says it is very good and then he says it is not good for the man to be alone and he is the only one in these opening chapters of the Bible to say that something is good or not good because he is the only one to know what is good so when Adam and Eve eat from the tree they are they're saying that they don't trust God's definition of Good and Evil they want to know it for themselves they want to be able to choose and judge on their own and we do this all the time we think that we know better when it comes to choosing what to do with our money or which relationships to be in or how we raise our families or the decisions we make at work we think we know what is good let's remember what God in his word has said is good and bring everything else underneath that instead. [00:23:45]

Whizby a theologian says the word translated trust in Proverbs 3:5 means to lie helpless face down it pictures a servant waiting for the Master's command in Readiness to obey or a defeated Soldier yielding himself to the Conquering General we can't trust God on our own terms always filtering what he says through our own definitions of good and evil instead we have to lie face down and say you know whatever I think God it doesn't matter because I trust you. [00:25:30]

In another Garden we see a very different choice being made um in the gospel of Mark Jesus goes to the Garden of Gethsemane with his disciples and it says he took Peter James and John along with him and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled my soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death he said to them stay here and keep watch going a little farther he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him Abba Father he said everything is possible for you take this cup from me yet not what I will but what you will Jesus makes a very different Choice rather than choosing his own way he submits his will to the will of the father and so when we listen to wisdom it tells us that we should do the same we have to say God your will be done not mine. [00:26:15]

In Proverbs wisdom is described as the tree of life and it bestows blessing because ultimately wisdom leads us to Jesus who is the one that gives us eternal life through his death and Resurrection so there are two ways that we can walk the way of wisdom in step with Jesus or the way of Darkness pulling away from God there are two women that we can listen to Lady wisdom who calls us to worship God or lady Folly who calls us in to worship the world and there are two examples of what it means to trust will we trust ourselves defining Good and Evil on our own or will we follow Jesus and submit our will to the will of the father and find eternal life ultimately what Proverbs 3 shows us is that wisdom is good and it leads to life Everlasting.
