Spending time with God is not about using tools or methods as levers to get what we want from Him; it is about seeking a genuine, personal relationship with Jesus, who desires to meet with us as a person, not a formula. When we approach God, our focus should be on connecting with Him, not just on extracting insights or blessings through our own efforts. [00:15]
John 15:15 (ESV)
"No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you."
Reflection:
How can you shift your time with God this week from a checklist of spiritual activities to a genuine conversation with Jesus as a friend?
True spiritual growth begins with humbling ourselves before God, admitting our need for His help, and recognizing that without His voice and guidance, nothing meaningful will happen in our time with Him. Whether kneeling, sitting, or standing, it is essential to pause and acknowledge our dependence on God, inviting Him to speak and move in ways we cannot manufacture on our own. [01:05]
James 4:6 (ESV)
"But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, 'God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.'"
Reflection:
What would it look like for you to intentionally humble yourself before God at the start of your devotional time today?
We are not the ones who discover spiritual truth by our own intelligence or effort; instead, the Holy Spirit is the one who reveals God’s Word and meaning to us as we seek Him with open hearts. Our role is to ask the Holy Spirit to show us what we cannot find on our own, trusting Him to illuminate Scripture and speak to us personally. [01:40]
1 Corinthians 2:10-12 (ESV)
"These things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God."
Reflection:
Before you read Scripture today, will you pause and sincerely ask the Holy Spirit to reveal something new to you that you could not discover on your own?
Instead of rushing through Scripture or relying on our own study techniques, we are invited to slow down, read the text repeatedly, and listen carefully for what God wants to highlight, trusting that He will speak as we pay attention. This posture of attentive listening allows us to notice words or phrases that the Holy Spirit brings to our attention, making our time in the Word more transformative. [01:55]
Psalm 119:18 (ESV)
"Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law."
Reflection:
As you read a passage of Scripture today, what stands out to you when you slow down and read it multiple times, listening for God’s voice?
After seeking God personally, sharing what He reveals with others in a group setting deepens our understanding and encourages one another in faith, as we learn together from the Holy Spirit’s work in each person. Discussing Scripture and spiritual insights with others helps us see different perspectives and strengthens our walk with God. [02:03]
Hebrews 10:24-25 (ESV)
"And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near."
Reflection:
Who can you share your spiritual insights with this week, and how might discussing God’s Word together encourage both of you?
It’s easy to approach time with God as if it’s a formula—thinking that if we use the right tools, study the right words, or follow the right steps, God is somehow obligated to reveal something to us. But that’s not how a relationship with Jesus works. He is a person, not a machine, and He desires a personal connection with us. All the study tools and resources in the world are helpful, but they don’t guarantee that the Holy Spirit will reveal truth to us. What matters most is the posture of our hearts as we come before God.
Whenever we set aside time to be with God—whether we’re kneeling, sitting, or standing in the kitchen—it’s essential to quiet ourselves and humbly admit our need for Him. We must recognize that unless God speaks, nothing truly meaningful will happen. We can have the entire Bible in front of us, but unless the Holy Spirit opens our hearts and minds, we won’t discover the treasures God wants to reveal. Our role is not to be the “finder” of truth, but to come as humble seekers, relying on the Holy Spirit as the true revealer.
Before diving into Scripture, it’s important to pause and pray, asking the Holy Spirit to show us what He wants us to see. This act of humility acknowledges that our own intelligence or effort isn’t enough. We need God’s help to understand and apply His Word. As we listen and pay attention to the text, we trust that God will speak in His way and in His timing. And as we share with others, we grow together in what the Spirit reveals, not just in what we can figure out on our own.
John 16:13 (ESV) — "When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come."
- Psalm 119:18 (ESV)
"Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law."
Here's the danger I want to talk about tonight before you guys go into a little small group session and then I'm going to come back and teach a little bit more. But just before you guys go into this, we talked a lot about tools. We've talked a lot about things that you can do and the danger is...you're going to see those as kind of levers like if I pull this God will do this if I study the words here God's obligated to show me some treasure he's obligated to show me whatever that's just the wrong way to think about spending time with GodJesus is a person and he wants it, if nothing else, he wants this to be personal. He wants it to be personal time. [00:00:01] (38 seconds) #PersonalTimeWithGod
And so we want to, I just want to challenge everybody. Anytime you come to your time with God, that's what we're training for here. Anytime you come to that time, you want to quiet yourselfAnd you just want to admit, whether you get on your knees, whether you sit there in the chair, wherever you're at, whether you're standing there in the kitchen, there's got to be a moment or moments of, God, if you don't speak, nothing's going to happen here.
