Seek First the Kingdom: Trust God Over Worry

Matthew 6 brings Jesus’ plain word right into the place where worry likes to live. Jesus says, “Take no thought for your life,” not because food, drink, clothing, bills, children, health, and tomorrow do not matter, but because the heavenly Father already knows every bit of it. The fowls of the air do not sow, reap, or gather into barns, yet God feeds them. The lilies do not toil or spin, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed like one of them. The grass is here today and gone tomorrow, and God still clothes it, so God’s children are not forgotten.

Worry gives way to anxiety and lets the mind dwell on difficulties and troubles. Concern may be part of being human, but worry as the default says something deeper, that Christianity is not really working down where life hurts. God’s grace is sufficient, and that word “sufficient” is not decoration. His strength, provision, and power are enough, not just enough for a T shirt, a song, or a phrase on the wall, but enough for the floor-walking night and the restless bed.

Jesus gives a simple, but not easy, remedy. “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.” The command starts with seeking God first, not second, not after panic, not after every other plan has failed. Prayer belongs at the front for the redeemed. Seeking first becomes a state of mind, the way life is ordered, the thing that keeps the panic button from getting hit.

The kingdom of stuff, the kingdom of me, and the kingdom of this world all press hard against that kind of trust. The devil would love to pin God’s child down with a foot on the neck, worrying over the one who wandered, the need that looks impossible, or the future that cannot be controlled. But worry will not cut it. Trust gives God room to come through, and when God comes through, God gets the glory.

His righteousness means doing what is right. Obedience is not a string attached for cruelty, but the necessary and best way because God is holy and righteous. The promise then stands: all these things shall be added. God knows appetite, clothing, shelter, and need. God sustained Israel in the wilderness, and God’s work done in God’s way will never lack God’s supply. Tomorrow has enough evil of its own, and God will take care of today, then tomorrow God will take care of tomorrow.
