Living Patiently and Serving Faithfully: Seeking God's Will

Second Samuel 2 opens a new season in David’s life with a simple but weighty word: “After this, David inquired of the Lord.” David has already been anointed, and Saul is dead, but David is still not king over all Israel. The long road to the throne is not over. Fifteen years of running from Saul now gives way to seven and a half more years of partial rule in Judah. God’s promise is certain, but God’s process is gradual.

David does not rush in and grab what God promised. David asks, “Shall I go up?” and then asks again, “To which shall I go?” God answers, “To Hebron.” David knows his destination, but he still needs navigation for the route. A man may know where he is headed and still need to know the next turn. David’s heart shows why he is called a man after God’s own heart, even with all his flaws, because David seeks the Lord before he steps forward.

Ziklag stands as a powerful picture. David had found refuge among the Philistines, even in the place tied to Goliath, but David cannot stay there if he is going to reign over Judah and Israel. A believer in Christ cannot be content living in Ziklag either. God loves his people too much to save them, cleanse them, and then leave them like they were. “Don’t be a Ziklagger” becomes the plain warning: do not profess Christ on Sunday and live like a Philistine the rest of the week.

Hebron also matters. Hebron is old, sacred ground. Abraham buried Sarah there. The patriarchs were buried there. Abraham built an altar there. Caleb received Hebron as a reward of faith. The covenant promise of Genesis 15 is tied to that place. God sends David not merely to a random city, but to a place loaded with promise, worship, refuge, and history.

God’s will must be sought not only in crisis but also in opportunity. David prays when the door seems open, not only when trouble presses him.
