Comparison and fear of missing out are part of the noise that keeps people anxious, angry, checked out, and always looking somewhere else. The noise says somebody else’s family, vacation, career, or life is better, and it keeps turning the volume up. Jesus says there is no freedom, joy, or peace down that road. Jesus says that holding onto his truth is what sets people free.
Comparison asks, “How am I measuring up?” and FOMO asks, “What am I missing?” Comparison is always a lose lose game. Pride grows when somebody comes out ahead, while anxiety and despair grow when somebody comes out behind. FOMO keeps people from receiving the gift God has put right in front of them, because the present is the only place to meet the Lord, respond to his grace, and see the good work he has prepared.
Jesus answers worry in Matthew 6 by telling people to look and see. The birds and flowers are not objects of worship, but signposts pointing to God’s provision. God feeds the birds and clothes the grass, and people bear far greater value than either. What people look at, ponder, and put before their eyes drives the internal temperature of the soul. Constantly scrolling picture perfect lives will produce discontent; stepping away from the screen and looking at an oak tree, birds, grass, and flowers can help re-ground the heart in what is true.
Jesus also replaces a transactional view of God with the good news of a Father who knows what his children need. The Father is not distant, and his care is not earned by getting all the right things done. Jesus, the true Son, brings messy people into the Father’s household through the cross. “My Father knows what I need” cuts through the clutter, even when it does not instantly solve every problem.
Jesus finally gives the race: “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness.” The kingdom is not merely heaven someday; it is God’s will, mercy, justice, truth, and beauty breaking into life right now. Seeking first the kingdom organizes prayer, Scripture, worship, community, repentance, repair, work, creativity, service, and witness around the King. The call is simple and hard: do not look around. Just swim the race God has marked out, trusting him to take care of the rest.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Comparison always makes everybody lose. Comparison either feeds pride or crushes the heart with anxiety. Neither outcome produces freedom, because both make another person’s life the measuring stick. Jesus calls people out of that rigged game before it hollows out the soul. [05:33]
- 2. The present is where God meets. FOMO keeps the heart hunting for a life somewhere else, while God gives grace, mercy, and good work here and now. Tomorrow may hold something new, but today is where God prepares a person for tomorrow. Presence is not passivity; it is awake attention to God’s work right in front of the face. [06:13]
- 3. Look at God’s provision, not pixels. Birds, flowers, grass, and trees become little tangible pictures of a Father who provides. Nature is not God, but creation points beyond itself to the God who cares for it. A person tangled in noise may need less screen time and more time asking God for eyes to see. [16:44]
- 4. Your Father knows what you need. Jesus makes God’s fatherhood central because worry loosens when people remember they are not dealing with a distant force. The cross opens the way for sinners to become children in God’s household. This truth does not erase every hard circumstance, but it clears enough mental clutter to hear the Spirit again. [22:33]
- 5. Do not look around, swim your race. Seeking God’s kingdom first gives life a truer center than comparison, ambition, or self-made standards. The kingdom calls for internal repentance and outward beauty, justice, mercy, service, and love. God has given enough kingdom work for sixty lifetimes, so a single life need not be wasted tracking everybody else. [30:40]
