Seeing Beyond: Embracing Mercy and Love for All
Summary
In my sermon, I emphasized the importance of not judging others based on worldly standards, but rather through the lens of God's love and mercy. I shared a personal story from my high school days about a friend named Gary, who was not considered "cool" by societal standards. Despite this, Gary was eager to learn about Jesus and his teachings, demonstrating a spiritual maturity that surpassed many of his peers. I used this story to illustrate that we often use the wrong yardstick to measure a person's worth, focusing on superficial attributes rather than their heart and character. I also discussed the story of the rich man and the poor man from the book of James, highlighting how God sees beyond our earthly status and possessions.
In the second part of my sermon, I delved into the concept of mercy, reminding the congregation that as recipients of God's mercy, we are called to extend the same to others. I warned that there will be a day of judgment, and we will be held accountable for how we treated others. I urged the congregation to treat everyone they meet as special, regardless of their societal status or beliefs. I concluded the sermon with a call to resist the increasing tribalism in our society and to treat everyone with love, kindness, and open arms, just as Jesus did.

Day 1: The Importance of Bible Reading
The Bible is a transformative tool that God uses to speak to us and guide us in our daily lives. It is filled with life lessons and wisdom that can shape our character and decisions. Engaging with the Bible daily allows us to deepen our relationship with God and understand His will for our lives. [06:00]
2 Timothy 3:16-17 - "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."
Reflection: How can you make Bible reading a daily habit and what steps can you take to understand and apply its teachings to your life?
Day 2: The Danger of Favoritism
Favoritism is a dangerous practice that can lead to unfair treatment and division. It is important to treat everyone with love and kindness, regardless of their social status or personal attributes. As followers of Jesus, we are called to love our neighbors as ourselves and show no partiality. [36:36]
James 2:1 - "My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism."

Day 3: The Right Measure of Coolness
The world's measure of coolness is often based on superficial and fleeting standards. However, God's measure of coolness is based on the heart and character of a person. It is important to view people through God's lens and not be swayed by worldly standards. [24:33]
1 Samuel 16:7 - "But the Lord said to Samuel, 'Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.'"

Day 4: The Foolishness of Favoring the Wrong Person
Favoring someone based on worldly standards such as wealth, popularity, or personal benefits can lead to disappointment and misplaced trust. It is wise to value people based on their character and their love for God rather than their worldly status. [03:28]
Proverbs 22:1 - "A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold."
Reflection: How can you ensure that you are valuing people for the right reasons?
Day 5: The Power of God's Word
God's Word is life-transforming and has the power to shape our lives. Engaging with it daily allows us to understand God's will for our lives and equips us to live a life that is pleasing to Him. [04:05]
Hebrews 4:12 - "For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."
Reflection: How has God's Word transformed your life and how can you use it to guide your daily decisions?
Quotes
1. "We live in a day of increasing tribalism but as followers of Jesus that's not for us. We could hold strong biblical views and disagree with people about things that are really important and still treat them with love and kindness and open welcoming arms." - 36:36
2. "You may be favoring someone because they got lots of money or because they're popular or because they're pretending to be your friend when they're not really. Or on the other hand, you may be dismissing someone because you can't see how they could possibly benefit your life because they're needy or they're socially awkward." - 03:28
3. "James is going to cover some important people skills. We're going to look at four of them over the next several weeks. The first one is don't play favorites. So if you got a Bible with you, turn to James chapter 2." - 07:22
4. "Maybe I'm using the wrong yardstick to measure coolness. Are you using the wrong yardstick? You know, what if some of the people we are quick to ignore or treat dismissively or look down our noses at, what if they're actually cool in God's eyes?" - 25:19
5. "James is chiding us here for favoring certain people for foolish reasons, people whose lifestyles and values are far from God. But hey, they're the in-group at school or they're the people who are successful in the business we want to be successful in. James says stop measuring people with the wrong yardstick. It's foolish. Use God's yardstick." - 26:44
