Secure in Christ: Knowing You Have Eternal Life

Assurance of salvation stands at the center of First John’s closing words. John writes to those who believe in the name of the Son of God “that you may know that you have eternal life.” That word know matters. Assurance is not guessing, hoping, or trying to feel saved. Assurance is rooted in the unchanging word of God.

Christ himself anchors that assurance. John 10 says Christ gives his sheep eternal life and they will never perish. Philippians says God will finish the good work he began. Romans says there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Salvation does not rest on a person’s ability to get saved or stay saved. Salvation rests on who Christ is and what Christ has done.

The cross shows why that is true. God is righteous, and heaven requires righteousness. No person can be as good as God, so no person can bring enough goodness to make heaven home. Christ died in the sinner’s place, bore sin, and placed his righteousness over the believer. If sin is covered up, God uncovers it. If sin is uncovered at the cross, God covers it. That is atonement. Christ covers the one who comes to him.

John’s words come with the tenderness of an old apostle saying, “my little children.” John had walked with Jesus, touched him, and known him, and now his closing burden is that believers would hold fast to Christ. First John lays out confidence in Christ, compassion for others, conquest over sin, and commitment to the truth. Christ is not a way, one truth among many, or one light in the darkness. Christ is the way, the truth, and the life.

Assurance also changes real life. The question, “Do you know if you would go to heaven?” exposes how many people live with “I don’t know,” “I hope so,” or “I’ve never thought about it.” God gives a Savior better than “I hope so.” God gives a Savior who lets a person know so.

Faith is resting in Christ like sitting in a chair. Knowing the chair can hold a person is not the same as resting weight on it. Knowing Christ can save is not the same as resting in him. Believing in the heart means settling the whole soul on Christ, trusting his finished work, and finding peace where fear used to whisper.
