Paul sets God’s wisdom against the wisdom of this age, the kind of wisdom that can split the atom, put men on the moon, and create artificial intelligence, yet cannot tell anybody what God is like or how sinners can know him. The cross looks foolish to a world that stays self-contained, locked inside what human minds can measure and explain. Christ crucified looked foolish to the rulers who put him to death, just as he looked foolish in the old Roman graffiti mocking Alexamenos for worshiping a crucified man.
Paul calls this wisdom “secret and hidden,” not because God has made salvation impossible to find, but because sinful eyes cannot see what is hiding in plain sight. God decreed the cross before the ages, before sin entered the world, before the Lamb was slain in history. The cross reveals more than God’s power as Creator. The cross reveals mercy, grace, holiness, love, and the awful cost of rescuing rebels.
Paul corrects the familiar use of Isaiah’s words about what no eye has seen or ear heard. God’s prepared blessings certainly include glory still to come, but Paul’s point is that God has already revealed the glories of Christ and his cross through the Spirit. The rulers did not understand the Lord of glory standing before them. Pilate chose reputation and political survival. The Jewish leaders chose their own authority. Blindness did not mean there was not enough evidence. Blindness meant they could not see.
The Spirit knows the depths of God because the Spirit is God. The Spirit then revealed God’s truth to the apostles, not as clever men figuring out the plan of God, but as men receiving it from the source. The apostles put that truth into Spirit-taught words, and those words came down through the written Word. The Spirit who inspired Scripture will not lead anybody against Scripture, whether the excuse sounds spiritual, practical, or generous.
The natural person cannot accept the things of the Spirit because they are spiritually discerned. The Spirit illumines, turning on the light bulb so that Christ’s death no longer remains a vague fact about religion but becomes the mercy of God for a real sinner. The mind of Christ comes as the Spirit opens eyes to see Jesus for who he is. The Spirit who opened Paul’s eyes, and opened the eyes of former skeptics and atheists, can open the eyes of friends, spouses, and loved ones still looking at the cross with a blank stare or a sneer. God’s people therefore keep praying and keep speaking with love, courage, persistence, and wisdom.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Worldly wisdom cannot know God [32:03] Worldly wisdom can accomplish astonishing things while remaining blind to ultimate reality. Intelligence, education, and technical skill do not naturally produce the knowledge of God. The cross exposes the limits of every worldview that leaves God out of the picture. [32:03]
- 2. The cross displays God’s glory [34:18] The cross is not a backup plan after human sin caught God by surprise. God decreed the Lamb before the foundation of the world so that mercy and grace would be seen in their fullest brightness. Christ’s glory becomes the believer’s glory as redeemed rebels praise the Lamb who was slain. [34:18]
- 3. The Spirit reveals what eyes miss [37:19] Christ is not hidden because the evidence is absent, but because sinners need spiritual sight. The Spirit reveals the beauty, truth, and saving power of the cross to those who could never discover it by natural reasoning. What once looked like folly becomes the wisdom and power of God. [37:19]
- 4. Scripture governs spiritual discernment [45:16] The Spirit who inspired God’s Word does not contradict the Word he breathed out. Claims of spiritual guidance must be tested by the written Scriptures, especially when sin is being excused as freedom or compassion. God’s living Word exposes the heart more accurately than personal feelings ever can. [45:16]
- 5. God can open any blinded eyes [50:52] Spiritual blindness is deep, but it is not stronger than the Spirit of God. The same Lord who changed Paul and countless former skeptics can pierce through indifference, hostility, and confusion. Persistent, loving witness rests not in human persuasion alone, but in God’s power to give sight.
