Paul brings Ephesians 1:13-14 right down to the question of how somebody can know God is still working and will finish what He started. The vision for a family apartment at the men’s center looked dead when the first bid came in, but God brought it back around and provided every dollar needed. God’s work did not become secure when belief finally caught up to it. God had it secure all along.
The word of truth stands in a world full of voices that look right and sound right but do not fit the truth. AI could make a sofa look perfect in a picture while missing the fact that it would not fit through a 34-inch doorway. The gospel does not give sinners advice about how to fix themselves. The gospel gives news about what Christ has already done: Christ died for sins, was buried, and rose again.
Paul says the Ephesians heard the gospel because somebody told them. The church cannot keep the good news contained inside its walls and then act surprised when the world outside never hears it. God gives the growth, but God calls His people to plant and water the seed of truth. The gospel also puts every sinner in front of the mirror, not the window. Sin belongs not only to the addict, criminal, or visibly broken person, but to everybody who has fallen short of God’s glory.
Saving faith means more than agreeing that Jesus sounds true. Saving faith rests its whole weight on Christ. The Ephesians once trusted magic, rituals, and false gods for security, but faith in Christ changed the direction of their lives. Belief always becomes direction sooner or later. Christ does not promise sinless perfection, but Christ does lead His people out of the same old road of sin and into newness of life.
The Holy Spirit becomes God’s seal on everybody who belongs to Christ. Paul does not ground assurance in how strongly somebody feels or how tightly somebody holds onto God. God places His own Spirit within His people, saying, “This is mine.” The Spirit’s conviction does not prove a believer has been abandoned. The Spirit’s conviction proves God will not let His children make peace with what is pulling them away from Christ.
The Spirit also serves as the down payment and first fruits of the glory still to come. God’s inheritance means more than merely going to heaven. God will remove sin, defeat death, redeem creation, make broken bodies new, and bring His children face-to-face with Jesus Christ. Salvation from beginning to end puts all the glory back where it belongs: but God. Grace gives nobody something to brag about, but it gives every redeemed person something to praise about.

Key Takeaways
- 1. The gospel is news, not advice. The gospel does not begin with a list of things sinners must do for God. The gospel begins with what God has done for sinners through Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. Self-help can tell somebody to try harder, but only Christ can save somebody who cannot fix himself. [37:17]
- 2. Faith needs the right object. Sincerity cannot make something true, just like a convincing AI picture cannot make the furniture fit. Saving faith rests in Jesus Christ, not in religion, effort, feelings, or a person’s ability to straighten out life. Faith in Christ changes not only eternity, but the overall direction of life right now. [41:40]
- 3. Proclaim truth and leave growth to God. The church has the responsibility to tell people about Jesus, even when they reject, mock, or ignore the words. God alone gives growth, often long after the seed has been planted. Faithfulness means proclamation, not controlling somebody else’s response. [35:18]
- 4. Conviction can be evidence of life. The Holy Spirit does not allow God’s people to settle down comfortably with the sin pulling them away from Christ. The grief over sin, the sense of wandering, and the desire to return are not proof that God has quit. The Spirit’s inner war points to God’s continuing work of sanctification. [52:51]
- 5. God finishes what grace begins. The Holy Spirit is God’s guarantee that the full inheritance is still coming. Present pain, sickness, death, and brokenness do not get the final word over God’s promises. What God started in grace, God will finish in glory.
