Sealed by the Spirit: Assurance of Our Inheritance
Devotional
Day 1: The Seal of Divine Assurance
The seal of the Holy Spirit is a profound assurance of our inheritance in Christ. Much like a king's seal on a document, it signifies authenticity and irrevocability. This divine seal assures us of our redemption and the fulfillment of God's promises. The presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives is a constant reminder that we are God's possession, and He will bring to completion the good work He has begun in us. This assurance is not just about future glory but also about our present identity and purpose. We are chosen, predestined, redeemed, and blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ. [07:17]
Ephesians 1:13-14 (ESV): "In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory."
Reflection: In what ways can you remind yourself daily of the Holy Spirit's seal on your life, and how does this assurance impact your sense of identity and purpose today?
Day 2: The Holy Spirit as a Foretaste
The concept of the Holy Spirit as a "down payment" might seem surprising, but it signifies that God's presence in our lives is a foretaste of the full inheritance we will receive. This assurance is a profound reminder of God's faithfulness. The Holy Spirit's presence is not just a promise of what is to come but a present reality that shapes our lives. It is a guarantee that God's promises will be fulfilled, providing us with the confidence to live with hope and expectation. [08:55]
2 Corinthians 1:21-22 (ESV): "And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee."
Reflection: How can you cultivate an awareness of the Holy Spirit's presence as a foretaste of your future inheritance, and how does this change your perspective on your current circumstances?
Day 3: Secured by the Spirit
The Apostle Paul emphasizes the Holy Spirit as a down payment, ensuring that our promised inheritance is secure. This truth is not just about future glory but also about our present identity and purpose in Christ. We are called to walk in this assurance, knowing that our salvation is not a matter of uncertainty. The Holy Spirit's presence in our lives is a constant reminder of God's faithfulness and the certainty of His promises. [09:40]
2 Corinthians 5:5 (ESV): "He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee."
Reflection: What specific steps can you take to live more fully in the assurance of your secured inheritance in Christ today?
Day 4: The Capstone of Spiritual Blessings
As believers, we are chosen, predestined, redeemed, and blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ. The sealing by the Holy Spirit is the capstone of these blessings, providing us with confidence in our secure and irrevocable salvation. This sealing is a divine guarantee that we are God's possession, and He will bring to completion the good work He has begun in us. It is a mark of ownership, a validation of our redemption, and a promise of what is to come. [11:24]
Ephesians 1:3-4 (ESV): "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him."
Reflection: How can you actively acknowledge and embrace the spiritual blessings you have in Christ, and how does this influence your daily walk with God?
Day 5: Walking in Assurance
We are called to walk in assurance, knowing that our salvation is not uncertain. The Holy Spirit's presence is a constant reminder of God's faithfulness, leading us to live confidently as God's possession, assured of His promises. This assurance should lead us to live with confidence, not in doubt or fear, but in the assurance that we are God's possession. It is a call to live with the certainty that God will fulfill His promises and complete the good work He has begun in us. [12:39]
Philippians 1:6 (ESV): "And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ."
Reflection: What fears or doubts do you need to surrender to God today, and how can you walk more confidently in the assurance of His promises?
Sermon Summary
In our journey of faith, we are reminded of the profound assurance and security that comes from being sealed by the Holy Spirit. This seal is not just a symbolic gesture but a divine guarantee of our inheritance in Christ. Just as a king's seal on a document signifies its authenticity and irrevocability, so does the Holy Spirit's seal on our lives. It is a mark of ownership, a validation of our redemption, and a promise of what is to come. This sealing is described as a "down payment," a concept that might seem surprising when we consider that God Himself, through the Holy Spirit, is this down payment. This means that the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives is a foretaste of the full inheritance we will receive, a guarantee that God's promises will be fulfilled.
The Apostle Paul emphasizes this truth in his letters, illustrating that the Holy Spirit is given to us as a down payment, ensuring that the inheritance promised to us is secure. This assurance is not just about future glory but also about our present identity and purpose. We are chosen, predestined, redeemed, and blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ. This sealing by the Holy Spirit is the capstone of these blessings, providing us with the confidence that our salvation is secure and irrevocable.
As believers, we are called to walk in this assurance, knowing that our salvation is not a matter of uncertainty. The Holy Spirit's presence in our lives is a constant reminder of God's faithfulness and the certainty of His promises. This should lead us to live with confidence, not in doubt or fear, but in the assurance that we are God's possession, and He will bring to completion the good work He has begun in us.

Sermon Clips
The picture we are to have here is of believers receiving a seal from God, having been purchased and paid for absolutely and completely, as it says in verse 7 with forgiveness of sins by Jesus and we now are marked by the gift of the Holy Spirit. [00:07:26]
Notice this word down payment here, we were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise who is the down payment now that is to tie in to this idea of security or certification or validation. [00:07:57]
The Holy Spirit becomes part of the final inheritance, the down payment of the inheritance and the down payment is the Holy Spirit. Let's see that in second Corinthians 5:4, while we were still in this tent we groan, being burdened not that we would be unclothed this is our body here not that we would be unclothed that is have nobody. [00:08:56]
He who has prepared us for this very thing namely, being swallowed up by resurrection life is God who has given us the Spirit as a down payment so there's that picture of down payment again, just as we saw in second Corinthians 1:22 he has sealed us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a down payment. [00:09:29]
The way the seal works, that is the way it gives security the way it certifies the way it validates the way it provides irrevocable certainty of outcome is that the inheritance has a huge part of it, I mean huge is an understatement because the answer is God. [00:10:05]
God the Spirit the Holy Spirit is the down payment I mean that's almost blasphemy isn't it, good night I mean how can you speak of God as a down payment and yet God the Holy Spirit is the down payment of what's coming there's going to be more of God. [00:10:31]
What we have seen is that this whole sentence from verse 3 on is God blessing us in Christ with every spiritual blessing, it includes he chose us in Christ to be holy it includes predestination for adoption as sons it includes redemption through the blood of Jesus. [00:11:17]
It includes lavish wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will and it includes an inheritance and will we get it will it come is all of this going to prove sure and secure and certified and validated and irrevocable. [00:11:44]
The sealing capstone blessing is God gives us his Holy Spirit to be in us as a down payment, meaning the rest of the payment which we'll see next time is going to happen and it cannot be revoked surely surely would you not agree Christians are to walk in tremendous assurance. [00:12:19]
Such things are not said to leave us saying well I'm really not sure if I'm saved and I'm not sure it's going to really come to me I'm not sure whether I'll go to heaven when I die or not that's not the way Christians talk not if these things are true. [00:12:46]
For an edict written in the name of the king and sealed with the king's ring cannot be revoked, that's the basic idea something that has the seal of a king or an authority cannot be revoked it is it is certain so when you seal something you validate it you certify it. [00:06:49]
You secure it you guarantee it so the picture we are to have here is of believers receiving a seal from God having been purchased and paid for absolutely and completely, as it says in verse 7 with forgiveness of sins by Jesus and we now are marked by the gift of the Holy Spirit. [00:07:26]
