Revival Through Scripture: Understanding, Joy, and Obedience

Nehemiah 8 opens with Israel back in Jerusalem after seventy years in exile. The walls and the city have been rebuilt, but God turns the attention of the people toward something deeper, their spiritual condition. Israel may be home again, but the people still need to return to the Lord. Change starts with God’s word.

Ezra brings out the Law of Moses because the people ask for it. Israel gathers “as one man,” hungry to hear what God has said. Ezra reads from early morning until midday, and the people stand, listen, lift their hands, bow their faces to the ground, and worship the Lord. The Bible is not treated like just another book. The Bible is received as the literal words of God.

Ezra does not stand as a one man show. The Levites help the people understand what is being read. The goal is not just that the Bible be heard, but that the Bible be understood. The Reformation showed the same need, because people could hear Latin read in church and still not know what God was saying. God’s word must be opened clearly, faithfully, and in a way that people can actually understand.

The Word of God then works like an x-ray machine. It reveals what is broken and unseen. When Israel understands the Law, the people begin to weep because they see their sin and how far they have wandered from God. That grief is good, but it is not meant to be the end. Ezra and the Levites tell the people not to mourn because the day is holy, and “the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

God’s word shows sin, but it also shows God’s faithfulness. Israel can look back and see that God was faithful through exile, through the return, and through the rebuilding of the walls. So the people eat, drink, share portions, and rejoice because they understood the words declared to them.

“And all the people gathered as one man into the square before the Water Gate. And they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses that the Lord had commanded Israel. So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could understand what they heard, on the first day of the seventh month. And he read from it facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand.
