When Scripture Sparks Revival: Josiah's Return to God

Second Kings 22 and 23 bring Josiah onto the stage as an eight year old king standing in the wreckage of a family line that had gone really, really bad. Josiah’s grandfather Manasseh had filled Judah with evil for fifty five years, not just allowing false worship, but dragging it right into the temple of the Lord. The temple, the place ancient Israel understood as God’s house, had become crowded with Baal altars, Asherah poles, sorcery, mediums, psychics, temple prostitutes, and even child sacrifice. The story does not soften that. Evil had moved into the holy place.

Josiah’s kingdom had inherited fifty seven straight years of darkness, chaos, and dysfunction. The story makes that weight feel almost ridiculous, because an eight year old now has to rule in the aftermath of assassination, failed coups, and generations of spiritual rot. Yet Josiah turns out to be a good king. In his eighteenth year, the temple needs repairs, and those repairs lead to the discovery of a dusty old scroll hidden away somewhere in God’s house.

The scroll turns out to be the Book of the Law from Moses. Scripture had been buried, edited around, ignored, or possibly replaced by versions that cut out the parts Manasseh did not like. The story suggests the danger plainly: when parts of the Bible get edited out, “not great things” happen. Jeremiah had already been publicly preaching the Torah, calling Judah away from pagan practices, but the people thought he sounded crazy. Then the hidden scroll shows up, and its truth matches what Jeremiah had been saying.

Josiah hears the scroll and has an “oh, no” moment. Scripture reveals where revival is needed, and Josiah tears his clothes in despair because Judah has not been doing what God said. Huldah the prophetess confirms the seriousness of the moment, and Josiah responds by pledging obedience to the Lord. Revival starts in Jerusalem. The evil altars come down.
