Scarcity & Trust

Paul brings the Corinthian church to an external clock for generosity, because feelings cannot measure twenty seconds and feelings cannot measure enough. A fast-running clock turns giving into a transaction, a holy vending machine where a person plants in order to control what comes back. A slow-running clock turns giving into a suggestion, a nice intention that never has to become bread in anybody’s hands. Second Corinthians 9 refuses both clocks and gives the church a better calibration, “God loves a cheerful giver,” and “God is able.”

Paul paints a portrait, not just a fundraising plan. Proverbs 22 gives the landscape. Money is real, money is powerful, and money carries power dynamics, but money does not rank people. The rich and the poor shake hands as equals because God made them both. The bank account is not the scorecard, and the church must never build a seating chart that gives honor to gold rings and pushes filthy rags to the side.

Psalm 112 gives the likeness. God is generous, so God’s people become generous. Generosity is not a rich-person thing or a poor-person thing, it is a Jesus-shaped thing. The person who has been hanging with Jesus starts to look like the One being stared at. The right living that scatters wide and gives to the poor does not wear thin, because it reflects the God whose righteousness endures forever.

Psalm 112 also gives the light. Before the Psalm says the righteous are generous, it says they are not afraid. Bad news may still come, but their hearts are steady, trusting in the Lord. The light source is outside the frame, and that light is this: God is able. God is able to pour grace until it pools, until there is everything needed at all times for everything, with still more left in the hands than what started there.

Isaiah 55 gives the perspective. The whole picture runs toward a table nobody paid to sit at. God abolishes the price tag and says, “Come, everyone who is thirsty.” That is why giving is not giving to God as though God needs payment. Giving is becoming like God, because the generous God has already pulled out the chair, filled the table, and opened his hands.
