Bible Reading
Matthew 7:24-27 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was its fall.”
[56:14]Luke 6:46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?”
[01:26:30]Judges 17:1-13 “There was a man of the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Micah. And he said to his mother, “The 1,100 pieces of silver that were taken from you, about which you uttered a curse, and also spoke it in my ears, behold, the silver is with me; I took it.” And his mother said, “Blessed be my son by the Lord.” And he restored the 1,100 pieces of silver to his mother. And his mother said, “I dedicate the silver to the Lord from my hand for my son, to make a carved image and a metal image. Now therefore I will restore it to you.” So when he restored the money to his mother, his mother took 200 pieces of silver and gave it to the silversmith, who made it into a carved image and a metal image. And it was in the house of Micah. And the man Micah had a shrine, and he made an ephod and household idols, and ordained one of his sons, who became his priest. In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes. Now there was a young man of Bethlehem in Judah, of the family of Judah, who was a Levite, and he sojourned there. And the man departed from the town of Bethlehem in Judah to sojourn where he could find a place. And as he journeyed, he came to the hill country of Ephraim to the house of Micah. And Micah said to him, “Where do you come from?” And he said to him, “I am a Levite of Bethlehem in Judah, and I am going to sojourn where I may find a place.” And Micah said to him, “Stay with me, and be to me a father and a priest, and I will give you ten pieces of silver a year and a suit of clothes and your living.” And the Levite went in. And the Levite was content to dwell with the man, and the young man became to him like one of his sons. And Micah ordained the Levite, and the young man became his priest, and was in the house of Micah. Then Micah said, “Now I know that the Lord will prosper me, because I have a Levite as priest.”
[01:36:56]Observation questions
- In Matthew 7:24–27, what do the two builders have in common, and what action separates them? What exposes the difference between their foundations? [56:54]
- What examples of false assurance can hide the difference between knowing about Jesus and obeying him? Identify at least three that relate to the challenge in Luke 6:46. [01:06:39]
- What is the difference between the works of obedience Jesus calls for and simply staying busy in church? [01:36:20]
- In Judges 17:1–13, what religious objects and arrangements does Micah put in place? By the end of the chapter, what makes him confident that God will bless him? [01:41:00]
Interpretation questions
- Both houses in Matthew 7 face a storm. What does this suggest about the idea that obedience guarantees an easy life? What does obedience provide instead? [01:13:12]
- How does the picture of a finished house with a hidden foundation explain why a person’s religious appearance can be misleading? Why might someone stop examining that foundation? [01:14:05]
- In light of Luke 6:46, why can church involvement, Bible knowledge, or spiritual experiences never replace obedience? What might those things fail to reveal about a person’s relationship with Jesus? [01:19:23]
- How does Micah’s confidence in Judges 17:13 illustrate self-deception? Why does adding a religious practice to a disobedient life fail to make that life right with God? [01:41:33]
Application questions
- Think of a command of Jesus you understand but have been slow to act on. What makes obedience difficult in that area, and what might one faithful step look like this week? [01:20:46]
- Honest self-examination means facing what is really happening rather than explaining it away. Where do you feel pressure from family, friends, or coworkers to compromise what God says? What support would help you respond faithfully? [01:09:32]
- Have you ever tried to balance a tolerated sin with something good—serving more, giving more, or helping someone? What would it look like to bring that sin honestly to God rather than trying to offset it? [01:10:23]
- God’s gifts are good, but they cannot replace knowing him. When something you have prayed for has not happened, what has that revealed about your expectations of God? What helps you seek him rather than only what he can give? [01:19:55]
- Church activity can leave private disobedience untouched. When you look at your life outside church—your relationships, work, or habits—where do you see obedience growing, and where do you need Christ’s help to change? [01:36:23]
- Micah attached God’s name to choices that went against God’s commands. Is there a habit, family tradition, or personal preference you have been reluctant to examine because it feels right or familiar? How could you test it against Scripture, and who could help you do that honestly? [01:44:34]
