Bible Reading
John 13:1-17Before the Passover Festival, Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
[33:01]The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.
Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.
After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
“No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”
Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”
“Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”
Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.”
For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.
When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them.
“You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am.
Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.
I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.”
[35:58]Ephesians 2:8-10For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift— not from works, so that no one can boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do.
[36:29]Galatians 1:10For am I now trying to persuade people, or God? Or am I striving to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.
[47:29]Romans 14:12So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.
[52:39]Observation questions
- What did Jesus know about His authority, His relationship with the Father, and His coming departure before He got up to wash the disciples’ feet?
- What actions did Jesus take to serve the disciples, and what did He tell them to do after He had finished washing their feet? [33:25]
- How did Peter first respond to Jesus’ offer to wash his feet, and how did his response change after Jesus explained what was at stake? [44:06]
- According to Ephesians 2:8-10, what is salvation not based on, and what are believers created in Christ Jesus to do? [39:14]
Interpretation questions
- Jesus had all authority under the Father, yet He took the lowest place and washed feet. What does His example show about the kind of greatness Jesus values in His people? [54:36]
- Jesus told Peter, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” How does this help distinguish between receiving Christ’s saving cleansing and serving Christ through good works?
- Ephesians says salvation is a gift, not the result of works, but it also says believers are created for good works. How can a believer serve faithfully without treating service as a way to earn God’s acceptance? [36:48]
- Galatians 1:10 says that a servant of Christ cannot be ruled by the desire to please people. What might this look like when someone’s efforts to serve are criticized, rejected, or misunderstood? [47:22]
Application questions
- Is there any part of life where good behavior, church attendance, giving, or serving has quietly become a substitute for trusting Christ alone? What would it look like to rest again in salvation by grace through faith? [01:00:24]
- Where is there a need in the church, home, workplace, or community that has been easy to notice but easy to leave for “somebody else”? What is one simple step that could be taken this week? [43:39]
- Which kinds of service are hardest to see as a “get to”—cleaning up, caring for children, parking farther away, praying faithfully, helping someone who may not thank you? What could help gratitude replace reluctance? [40:22]
- Has criticism, rejection, or a past hurt caused hesitation to serve? How can serving for Christ’s pleasure, rather than people’s applause, bring freedom in that situation? [47:31]
- Romans 14:12 reminds each person that he or she will give an account to God. How are time, abilities, money, influence, and opportunities currently being placed under the Lord’s authority? What is one area that needs more faithful stewardship? [52:45]
- Is there an excuse that has been repeated for avoiding obedience or service—being too busy, too old, not gifted enough, or waiting to be asked? What would repentance and a willing “Here am I; send me” response look like? [53:20]
- Jesus says those who know these things are blessed if they do them. What is one act of obedience that has been aimed at for too long but needs to become a real action this week? [59:39]
