“They would have had all the ministries. They would have been had all the wealthy people in their crowd. They would have had all the different things that were going on amongst um a busy city. And for many of us, we think and we we think about these mega churches, right? And so we see like these places where they're they're filled with ministries and they're filled with different things and they have all the cool people and all the cool worship and all the cool music and the lights and the strobes and all the different things.”
“But just like the church in Sardis, if we're not careful, then it becomes what we did and not what we do. It becomes this is the reputation that we once had and and not the reputation that we currently have. This is not who we really are. This is who we were. And so it's important for us to pay attention.”
“We're forced to ask ourselves questions. We're forced to ask ourselves, well, what have I been asleep to? What have I let die? Another question that we have to ask is what has allowed has been allowed to grow in my absence? And lastly, what is Jesus calling us to do?”
“What we find is that Jesus is communicating to them that on the outward side, it looks like everything is great, but I'm seeing something that only I can see. Only I can see that you are dead. Only I can see that you you may present yourself to the world in this way, but I know when you're in the quiet places of your home, in your room, when you go out to the streets and and in your inner thoughts, I know who you really are.”
“How many people do we walk past who are on their way to hell and we do nothing? How many people are suffering deeply and we see them every day and sometimes it's not always just the person that you see on the corner with no place to live. Sometimes it's the very same person that you see like right next door to you. Sometimes it's the person at work that's dying on the inside and you might not see it on the outside but it's there.”
“But if that was true, Jesus would not have written this letter. He would have not written a letter to a church just to say, "Hey, you're headed for hell. There's nothing you can do." He wrote this letter so that we could read this letter and know this is where we are. Jesus loves us so much that he's willing to to risk our hurt feelings and how we think and and the ways that we believe and he's willing to say I do not care or I wouldn't say don't care.”
“And so that means that some things died. That means that some parts of them are gone. There are some things that have been shaven off um in their slumber, in their in their um in their rottingness. Um and so I kind of equate it to how you look at um a field of crops. And so I think when you look at a field of crops, you might look one day and it looks prosperous and it looks great, but then you go inside and then you decide, I don't want to go in.”
“And so for the church and Sardis, they had to accept like we have to let go of this reputation. We can't close fist and hold tightly to this reputation that we have. We have to let it go. In order for us to follow Jesus, we have to let it go. And then you have to strengthen what remains. And I think that goes into the next point of remembering because you have to remember what is it that God had given us that we can strengthen?”
“We have to remember Jesus. I think for many of us, we have forgotten the gospel. We have forgotten that Jesus came down, wrapped himself in human flesh, and died for our sins. is that he did not just do a bunch of miracles on earth, which were great, but he also took the wrath that we all were owed that was supposed to be for us. I think many of us just console it down to I did a couple bad things and Jesus said, "I'll just forgive it."”
“And so, we have to remember Jesus. We have to remember what he has done. We have to remember what he um what what he did on the cross and what he rose from and why he rose. And we have to live our lives continually remembering that. And so I feel like for each of every one of us, I I I've mentioned this before, but you need to go home in another quiet place and you need to write down your story.”
“Because I choose not to remember. Because I choose not to write it down. Because I choose not to go to come back to it. And so it's important for you to write down your testimony. It's important for you to take the time to let me reflect on what Jesus has done in my life and reflect on what he's doing. And then you also need to write down what is the gospel. Remember what Jesus has done.”
“The the you can't you can't just go and start doing new things. You have to sit and say, "Lord, I am acknowledging what I have done and I turn away from these things and I turn towards you." That that that doesn't just mean a sense of sorry. It means a a physical and spiritual turning from a way of life where that we used to live to the way that God wants us to live.”
“And so God is calling us not to just feel sorry, not to just be sad, not to just do to to to be all of in our emotions about it, but he's actually asking us make a decision to turn away. And so we have to ask ourselves why why is this important? And I think this is important because if I'm being honest, our our world is dying. Um, this country is passing away.”
“What will he find when he returns? Will he return and find us following him and and blessing the people around us? Or will he find us asleep? Because Jesus explains that he will come like a thief in the night. And we will not know when he will return, but we do know that he is coming. And so, it's important that we understand that when Jesus comes back, we can't be asleep.”
“We must be awake. We must be awaiting his arrival. We must be not just allowing the the the the evil in this world to grab a hold of everybody that it can and strangle them, but we must be people that are serving the Lord. And so, as people of the Lord, we have to wake up. We have to be mindful of what it is that we have fallen asleep to, the things that we've ignored, the people we've ignored, the the ways that we've ignored our own lives.”
“And I think when we do this, we become a church that will meet Jesus and we will see him again and we will be awake and we will know what it is that he has called us to do and know that we have done it to the best that we could, that we have gone out into a sick world and tried to show them and point them to a savior.”
