The question “Who am I?” sits underneath so many other questions people carry through life. Erik Erikson’s stages show how trust, capability, love, work, and meaning all press toward that deeper question. Identity gets built through experiences, relationships, success, failure, trauma, culture, family, and all the labels people pick up along the way.

Paul’s life shows how fragile those labels can be. Paul had the resume, the heritage, the education, and the religious credentials. Christ shattered that old identity and showed him that who he was went deeper than what he had achieved. Paul had to go all the way back to Genesis to find an answer.

Genesis says that God created mankind in His image, male and female He created them. The image of God cannot mean that God is confined by human sex or gender. The image of God has been understood in different ways through history. Thomas Aquinas saw reason and the human capacity to know God. The intellect matters, and reading Scripture matters, but Bible knowledge alone does not bring a person into the fullness of God’s image.

The image of God also cannot become just a religious to do list. Luther and Calvin rightly saw that the image includes what people do, and right actions matter. The right thing, however, is not deep enough when it becomes the whole definition of Christianity. A person can know the Bible, know the rules, and even know what is wrong with everybody else, while still not knowing how to have a relationship with God.

Karl Barth points back to the “us” of Genesis. God’s own life is relational, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Human beings, made in God’s image, are not made merely as isolated individuals. Human beings are creatures for relationship with God and with each other. They are made to love and to be loved.

God’s care becomes personal when He is no longer only an idea in the mind or a set of right behaviors. The image of a friend in white holding tight during a terrible accident reveals a God who comes close, protects, and wants relationship. The deepest answer to “Who am I?” is not marriage status, profession, intelligence, failure, trauma, or abuse. Identity becomes inseparable from Jesus Christ. God is the One who wants to hug His children tight.
