Day 1: Stone Pillows and Popcorn Drawers: Finding Sanctuary in Smells

The smell of hardware store tools and grandmothers’ cookie drawers become holy ground when they awaken our deepest sense of belonging. Jacob’s rock pillow and oil-anointed stone remind us that sacred spaces often hide in life’s ordinary textures. Sanctuary isn’t about grandeur but about where our shoulders relax and our breath slows. These places train us to recognize God’s nearness in the grit and grain of daily life. What smells, textures, or routines whisper “home” to your soul? [34:24]

Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.” And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”

Day 2: God at the Bottom of the Staircase

Sermon Summary

Genesis 28 begins with Jacob far away from anything that feels like home. Jacob has won Esau’s birthright and stolen Isaac’s blessing, and now Esau is mad enough that Jacob has to run. Home had been the place of safety, the place where a person can breathe, like a grandparent’s house by the lake, a cookie drawer, or the smell of an old hardware store. Jacob leaves that safe place and heads toward family he has never really known, in a place he has never really gone.

Jacob stops at night, takes a stone for a pillow, and falls asleep. Dreams become one of those open places where God can speak, because sleep loosens the tight grip that life often has on a person. The dream shows a stairway touching earth and heaven, a place where the distance between God’s world and this world grows thin. The strange and beautiful thing is not just the stairway. The dream places God beside Jacob, at the bottom, right where the runaway is sleeping.

God’s promise comes to Jacob in that exposed place: God is with him. Jacob wakes up and says, “Surely the Lord is in this place and I didn’t know it.” Sanctuary, then, is not only a church building. God’s presence can come on a nature hike, on a boat, in a stressful workplace moment, at a birth, beside a deathbed, or in an unexpected conversation. Holy moments happen everywhere.

Sacred places still matter. A sanctuary becomes different over time because people gather there again and again to sing, pray, read scripture, baptize, marry, grieve, and share life. Jacob’s stone becomes a marked place when he pours oil on it and names it God’s house. Ordinary rooms can become holy when prayer and presence soak into them.

God’s blessing to Jacob carries Abraham’s promise forward: Jacob’s descendants will be like dust, even like topsoil. That image matters. Topsoil is the good place where growth happens, where seed can take root. The blessing does not end with being safe or feeling found. The blessing becomes a call to be sanctuary, to be topsoil, to be the place where good things grow for others.

Jacob cannot stay at Bethel. Jacob has to get up and go. Gratitude rises from encounter, and giving becomes more than obligation. Jacob gives because God met him, protected him, and blessed him. The blessing received in sanctuary is meant to be carried out into the world.
