The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life move him more than the calling of God.

His prayer after killing a thousand men sounds less like worship and more like, “Hey, God, get me something.” God is not an errand boy, but Samson speaks as if his strength belongs to him. Samson is driven by desire, led by lust, greed, anger, and revenge. He lives like he can always sin now and cry out later.

Delilah exposes how desperate Samson has become. Samson loves her, tells her all his heart, and gives away the secret connected to his strength. Sin works like that monkey trap, where the hand could get free if the treat were released, but the trapped one will not let go. Samson holds on to what is ruining him until the Philistines take his eyes, mock him, and praise Dagon. His undisciplined life brings more glory to Dagon than to the God of Israel.

Yet Samson’s death is different. Samson finally calls out, “O Lord God,” and asks to be strengthened. His motive still has revenge in it, but his eyes finally turn to the real source. Samson is weakest physically when he becomes strongest spiritually. Hebrews can name him among the faithful because God makes strong out of weakness. God uses broken people, no one is too far to pray for, strength belongs to God, and the object of faith matters more than the strength of faith. Christ alone is the right object, and it is never too late to turn to him.

“He's been humbled. Now his motive wasn't pure. Right? He wanted some revenge revenge. But, like, how many of our motives are pure when we do something for the Lord? 100% pure. He he finally knew the true source of his power. He finally cried out to God because God was the true source of his power. And even though his motive was tainted, he was still calling out the right source. He knew, I can't, but you can't. I'm broken, but you're perfect. I'm weak, but you're strong. You're the source of all strength. This is what we need to understand.”

“Number three, your strength is God's strength. Some of you and some of us, all of us, we try to live this life in our own strength, doing our things our own way. We try to do our in our own power. God owns this power. God owns your strength. Remember where it comes from. Remember the source. And don't chase your glory like Samson did. Chase his glory. One day that strength may go away if you're not careful. Number four, the object of your faith matters more than the strength of your faith. The object of your faith matters more than the strength of your faith. Samson didn't have real strong faith here at the end, but the object of his faith finally was the right object, and that was Christ.”
