Jesus takes Matthew 5 and calls the church salt and light, but Jesus does not use two analogies just to say the same thing twice. Salt and light carry two different, connected truths. Salt speaks first as a loving warning. The word earth points to soil, not the whole planet, so Jesus is saying the church is the salt of the soil. Salt can lose its saltiness when it is overexposed to the wrong elements. Thunderstorms and heat can dilute it, and the wrong elements can dilute the distinct presence of God in a believer’s life.

Jesus warns that salt without saltiness is useless. Salt without saltiness is sand. The church’s label as Christian changes nothing in a world that cannot taste the Christ inside it. The church’s distinctive is not perfection, standards, or being better than everyone else. The church’s distinctive is the presence of God. Moses understood this when he said that God’s presence is what made God’s people different from everyone else. So the church is not called to fear, but to guard the heart and refuse careless Christianity.

Jesus then calls the church the light of the world. The word world means cosmos, every strata of society. Light is not supposed to hide in the building. Salt is not a side dish sitting on the table, it gets sprinkled all over the meal. The church is meant to be sprinkled across Auckland, New Zealand, every workplace, every industry, every home, and every corner of ordinary life. God is as interested in the bridge being built, the meal being cooked, the clothes being designed, and the business being run as in the word being preached. If every believer is a minister, every vocation can become ministry.

The tension matters. Some people preserve saltiness by hiding from the world, while others claim light without protecting the salt. Jesus holds both together. If saltiness is preserved, God can position the light. Daniel speaks the language of Babylon, but does not eat Babylon’s food. His relevance gets him into the conversation, but his revelation gives him something to say once he gets there.

The church is not disqualified by inconsistency. The treasure is carried in earthen vessels so that the glory is clearly God’s. Inconsistency does not prove Jesus is not alive, it proves the believer is still alive. The church gathers like people coming to a fresh well with buckets, but the bucket is not meant to stay at the well or go home empty. God fills the bucket so life can be carried back to the village.
