Running the Race: Embracing Freedom and Love
Summary
### Summary
Good morning, Summit Community Church. Today, we continue our series "Run the Race," where we explore the sports metaphors Paul uses to illustrate the life of faith. Paul emphasizes that once we come to know Christ, we enter a race that requires us to live actively, purposefully, and with faith. This race is not a competition against each other but a collective journey where we help one another finish well.
In previous weeks, we examined 1 Corinthians 9 and Philippians 3, where Paul discusses the importance of running the race with purpose and letting go of past baggage. Today, we turn to Galatians 5 to understand how to avoid distractions and stay focused on the race. Paul warns against the Judaizers, who tried to mix the law with the gospel, thereby nullifying the freedom Christ offers.
Paul's message in Galatians 5:1 is clear: "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free." He urges us to stand firm and not be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Paul addresses the temptation to add religious rituals to the gospel, which leads to legalism and nullifies the grace of God. He emphasizes that our faith should express itself through love, not through adherence to the law.
Paul also warns against the "gratitude ethic," where we feel compelled to repay God for His gift of salvation. This mindset turns us into debtors rather than sons and daughters of God. Instead, we should live in the freedom Christ has given us, focusing on loving God and others.
Finally, Paul ties freedom to love. True freedom in Christ liberates us to love God and others genuinely. If we are not loving others as we should, it indicates that we are not loving God as we ought to. This love is the true test of our faith and the essence of running the race well.
### Key Takeaways
1. The Race of Faith is Collective, Not Competitive: We are not running against each other but with each other. Our goal is to help one another finish well, whether by pacing, supporting, or even carrying each other. This collective effort reflects the unity and love that should characterize the body of Christ. [34:24]
2. Freedom in Christ Means Letting Go of Legalism: Paul warns against the Judaizers who tried to mix the law with the gospel. This legalism nullifies the grace of God and burdens us with unnecessary rituals. True freedom in Christ means standing firm in the grace He has given us, without adding any religious obligations. [36:33]
3. Avoid the Gratitude Ethic: Feeling the need to repay God for His gift of salvation turns us into debtors rather than sons and daughters. This mindset is a form of slavery. Instead, we should live in the freedom Christ has given us, motivated by love rather than obligation. [43:12]
4. Faith Expresses Itself Through Love: Paul emphasizes that neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value; the only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. This means our actions should be driven by genuine love for God and others, not by a desire to earn God's favor. [52:17]
5. Freedom is the Test of Our Faith: True freedom in Christ liberates us to love God and others genuinely. If we are not loving others as we should, it indicates that we are not loving God as we ought to. This love is the true test of our faith and the essence of running the race well. [55:55]

Devotional
Day 1: Running the Race Together
The race of faith is not a solitary endeavor but a collective journey where we support and uplift one another. Paul uses the metaphor of a race to illustrate the Christian life, emphasizing that we are not competing against each other but running together. Our goal is to help one another finish well, whether by pacing, supporting, or even carrying each other. This collective effort reflects the unity and love that should characterize the body of Christ. When we see a fellow believer struggling, it is our responsibility to come alongside them and offer encouragement and support. This mutual support strengthens the entire community and helps us all to run the race with endurance and purpose. [34:24]
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (ESV): "Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!"
Reflection: Think of someone in your church community who may be struggling in their faith. How can you reach out to them this week to offer support and encouragement?
Day 2: Freedom from Legalism
Paul warns against the Judaizers who tried to mix the law with the gospel, thereby nullifying the freedom Christ offers. Legalism burdens us with unnecessary rituals and nullifies the grace of God. True freedom in Christ means standing firm in the grace He has given us, without adding any religious obligations. This freedom allows us to live a life of faith that is not constrained by legalistic practices but is instead characterized by love and grace. It is essential to recognize and reject any form of legalism that may creep into our faith practices, ensuring that we remain rooted in the freedom that Christ has provided. [36:33]
Galatians 5:1 (ESV): "For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery."
Reflection: Are there any legalistic practices or beliefs that you have been holding onto? How can you let go of these and embrace the freedom that Christ offers?
Day 3: Living Beyond the Gratitude Ethic
Feeling the need to repay God for His gift of salvation turns us into debtors rather than sons and daughters. This mindset is a form of slavery that contradicts the freedom Christ has given us. Instead, we should live in the freedom Christ has given us, motivated by love rather than obligation. Our actions should stem from a genuine love for God and others, not from a sense of indebtedness. This shift in mindset allows us to experience the fullness of God's grace and to live out our faith in a way that is liberating and life-giving. [43:12]
Romans 8:15 (ESV): "For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, 'Abba! Father!'"
Reflection: Reflect on your motivations for serving God. Are they driven by love or by a sense of obligation? How can you shift your mindset to embrace the freedom of being a child of God?
Day 4: Faith Expressing Itself Through Love
Paul emphasizes that neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value; the only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. This means our actions should be driven by genuine love for God and others, not by a desire to earn God's favor. True faith is demonstrated through acts of love and compassion, reflecting the character of Christ in our daily lives. It is essential to examine our actions and ensure that they are motivated by love, as this is the true test of our faith. [52:17]
James 2:17-18 (ESV): "So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, 'You have faith and I have works.' Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works."
Reflection: Think of a recent action you took. Was it motivated by love or by a desire to earn favor? How can you ensure that your future actions are driven by genuine love for God and others?
Day 5: Freedom to Love God and Others
True freedom in Christ liberates us to love God and others genuinely. If we are not loving others as we should, it indicates that we are not loving God as we ought to. This love is the true test of our faith and the essence of running the race well. When we experience the freedom that Christ offers, it transforms our relationships and enables us to love others selflessly. This love is a reflection of our relationship with God and is the ultimate expression of our faith. [55:55]
1 John 4:20-21 (ESV): "If anyone says, 'I love God,' and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother."
Reflection: Is there someone in your life whom you find difficult to love? How can you ask God to help you love them genuinely and selflessly this week?
Quotes
1. "We could draw strength and wisdom from these metaphors of how to do this race and do it well. All these metaphors from Paul are to show us how to do this. How to live life after we come to know Christ as our Savior and our Lord. Once you know Christ, you enter the race at that point in time. So Paul says in these analogies, these metaphors, how we can live this life full of action, full of faith. Full of activity and full of purpose. Knowing this, the life of faith is not a passive life. We don't wait for it to come to us. We go to it. We pursue it aggressively, purposefully, effectively for the cause of Christ." [32:48] (39 seconds)
2. "I run it to help you finish. Well, you run it with me to finish. Well, sometimes as us pacing one another, sometimes it's helping one another. Sometimes it's carrying each other that we might cross the finish line and cross it. Well, but we run this race together. That's how we run the race." [34:24] (16 seconds)
3. "Paul said, I'll let mine go. Let yours go today. We're going to be in Galatians chapter five. If you'll turn there with us in just a moment, we're going to look at how we sometimes get distracted in the race and how we sometimes could even temporarily fail in the race. But we can get back into race and we avoid certain distractions, make course corrections. Get back to the Gospel and God's plans for us to embrace our freedom in Christ." [35:05] (26 seconds)
4. "You, my brothers and sisters were called to be free, but do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh rather serve one another humbly in love for the entire law. So field and keeping this one command, love your neighbor as yourself. If you bite and devour each other, watch out, or you'll be destroyed by each other." [37:38] (18 seconds)
5. "I worship because. Because Christ is my savior. I devote my time to him to get to know him because he is my savior. I pray because he is my savior. I pray because I lean into him because he's my savior. I don't do it to get attention. I don't do it to get recognition. But how many times can we? Look at me. Look at me. I'm raising my hands. Look at me. I'm in the worship. Look at me. I got books. Full of my devotions. Ain't I? Ain't I? All right. Good. That's bad. English in it. Aren't I? Good. I graduate high school and college. Yes, I'm good or aren't I? I am really good. I check the boxes. I got all these journals full of my journals. Look at me." [40:14] (46 seconds)
6. "When you choose anything in addition to Christ, you nullify the gift of salvation. That it is. He says live in that gift walk in that gift. The second thing at stake. And we fall for this is this. We become debtors to the entire entirety of God's law. Not just part. can't you can't do part of this thing. These Judaizers are putting to you about all this religious stuff going on. You can't take part of that and this it's all or nothing. It's all of Christ or nothing. It's all that or nothing. You can't take part." [49:32] (32 seconds)
7. "If we are not loving others the way we should. That means we're not loving God the way we're supposed to because loving God equals loving others. Not loving God equals not loving others. There's no way to get around it. And being free means we do what God wants. We are what God wants out of us and we enjoy the abundant life. God promises us right here and right now. If you are not loving others where you're supposed to love them. Guess what? You're not loving God. Like you're supposed to. When you do a heart check on that." [57:17] (40 seconds)
8. "Paul says this then he take he ties it together. It is for freedom that Christ sets you free stand firm the verse there's 1314 you my brothers and sisters were called to be free. See the connection but do not use your freedom to be free. Freedom to to indulge your flesh rather serve one another humbly in love with the entire law is fulfilled and keeping this one command love your neighbor as yourself. Do a heart check. How do you run the race? Run it? Well, how do you get back in the race?" [58:47] (33 seconds)
9. "Here's the bottom line three quick points. We must pursue Christ and only Christ. Second thing is this don't get trapped in religion or religious activity in your life because it's that kind of activity. You worship you spend time with God and you love like you're supposed to love because you love God plain and simple not to get attention of others. I get the applause of others bring attention to him. Third thing is this love God the way you're supposed to love so you can love others the way you're supposed to love them get that order straight in our lives." [59:28] (32 seconds)
