Rooted Together: Sent Into the World to Serve

The Rooted Together series comes to its sending point with the Great Commission. The image of Pando, that one aspen tree with one root system and 47,000 trunks, gives the church a picture of what it means to be rooted together and still spread out in different directions. The church does not stay planted in one comfortable room forever. Jesus says, “Go out into all the world,” and that means the life of faith is meant to move.

The sign at the edge of a church parking lot says it plain: “You are now entering your mission field.” The mission field is not mainly the sanctuary. The mission field is the world right outside the doors, the neighbors not yet met, the disaster that just hit town, the family whose roof caved in, the person on the margins nobody else wants to talk to. The tornado story shows what happens when a church has been getting ready for years. The kitchen goes into full swing, families find shelter, crews get sent out, and grace gives people the skills needed for the work at hand.

Jesus does not send scared disciples because they already feel ready. Jesus sends the same disciples who had been hiding in locked rooms, scared of Rome and scared of the cross. The call still lands on tired people, comfortable people, practical people, and people who have “already tried that.” The call does not ask every person to do the same job. Some people speak, some garden, some build, some listen, and some tell the stories that keep a community from forgetting both its mistakes and its hope.

The church building becomes a place of rest so the church can go back out. Coffee, conversation, and community matter, but they are meant to build toward action. Millennials and Gen Z are not simply looking for a show or a club; many are yearning for a loving, caring community that seeks to do good in the world. Food pantries and hands-on service show how words become action.

The Great Commission also challenges the church to ask why it exists. A clear mission cannot be, “close the doors when everybody is gone.” Sixty years of ministry becomes a reason to hope for sixty more, not a reason to coast. God promises to be with the church, not that the work will be easy. Christ challenges disciples to go out, think deeply, and make somebody’s life better.
