Sermon Summary

Sermon Clips

"When I think of all this, what I've written about, he says, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the creator of everything in heaven and on earth. And I pray that from his glorious unlimited resources, he will empower you, you the readers, you the people who ripple down through the generations, with inner strength through his spirit." [01:05:39]

"He says, then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust him. He says, your roots will grow down deep into God's love and keep you strong. He says, then may you have the power to understand, as all God's people should, how wide, how long, how high, how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it's too great to understand fully." [01:06:01]

"Paul's prayer for them is that they would have power. Not power over people, but power to live and thrive as followers of Jesus. That they would do this in and through God's strength. It's one of the realities, isn't it? That for all of us, there are times that we feel overwhelmed with different elements of life." [01:07:45]

"With all that lies ahead, you're not doing this in your own strength. You're not doing this just by yourself. You have the unlimited resources, the glorious unlimited resources of the almighty God. You live in the love that cannot be comprehended, high and deep and wide, that you cannot comprehend." [01:08:32]

"And Paul prays that God's spirit would be such a strong influence at the controlling centre, at the very heart of who we are, that our lives would show that. That's what he's talking about here, the role of God's spirit is. Working deep within us, transforming us to trust him in such a way, to trust in his resources." [01:10:25]

"And he's praying that God's spirit would work deep in that central part of us, strengthening us, renewing us, teaching us to trust in him again and again and again. It's in our inner being, in our heart, where the God's spirit does work among us. You think about the work that he might be doing amongst us at this moment." [01:10:36]

"Your roots will grow down into God's love and keep you strong. I love that imagery. Does that imagery resonate with you? Your roots will grow down into God's love. I hate weeds. There's probably nothing surprising there. I hate that they continually grow. I hate that they block out the plants I want to grow." [01:17:19]

"When Jesus makes his home in your heart, it begins a process of growing deep roots. There's a lot of difference between a sapling and an established tree, isn't there? An established tree takes time. It builds day by day by day by day, doesn't it? It sends its roots deeper and deeper and deeper as it grows stronger and stronger." [01:17:56]

"God's love is kind of like that. You enter in and it's the more and more that you explore it, the deeper and deeper it comes and it reveals so much more. No matter how much we know of the love of Jesus, how fully we enter into his love for us, Paul is reminding us that there is always more to know and experience." [01:26:16]

"If you're going to build a retaining wall, don't take shortcuts. Don't take shortcuts. It takes time. It takes time. It's hard. work to dig a deep hole. Go to my friend Rich Thompson, he has a pole digger that he knows that I borrowed from him to dig some of my holes. It takes time. Use good quality materials." [01:29:24]

"Paul's prayer today that ripples through the ages is that you wouldn't take shortcuts in your faith, but that you would dig deep. That you would use the resources of the infinite God, empowered through his spirit. Let his spirit change you at the very, very centre of who you are in your inner being, trusting him day by day." [01:30:08]

"You are the God who, through your spirit, strengthens us, helps us to grow when we put our trust and our faith in you. Please forgive us when we've tried to do things in our own strength. Please forgive us when we've run away from you, when we've rebelled from you. Father, may we encounter your love." [01:31:05]
