True happiness and blessing come from delighting in the law of the Lord and meditating on His word day and night, rather than following the ways of the wicked. When you prioritize God's wisdom above all else, your decisions and character are shaped by His truth, leading to a life that is fruitful and aligned with His purpose. The psalmist reminds us that our focus should not be on keeping up with the world’s standards or material pursuits, but on seeking God’s will and allowing His word to guide every step we take. As you start each day, make it your aim to reflect on Scripture, letting it fill your mind and direct your actions, so that you may prosper in the way God intends. [01:14:21]
Psalm 1:1-2 (NRSV)
Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers; but their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditate day and night.
Reflection: What is one practical way you can prioritize meditating on God’s word at the start of your day this week, and how might that change your responses to the decisions you face?
Those who delight in God’s word are like trees planted by streams of water—intentionally placed, rooted, and grounded by God Himself. You are not an accident or left to drift aimlessly; God has planted you where you are for a reason, providing you with a firm foundation that can withstand the storms of life. Just as a tree planted in the ground is held steady by the soil, so God holds you steady, giving you strength and stability even when you feel weak or shaken. Trust that your placement is purposeful, and that God is both your planter and your sustainer, ensuring you are rooted in something unshakeable. [01:31:37]
Psalm 1:3a (NRSV)
They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper.
Reflection: In what ways can you recognize and embrace the specific place or season where God has planted you, trusting His purpose even if it’s not where you expected to be?
God’s design for His people is not isolation, but community—like trees whose roots intertwine beneath the surface, supporting and nourishing one another. When you are planted among others who seek God, your faith is strengthened by their encouragement, prayers, and presence, especially in times of trial. This interconnectedness means that when you are weak, others can help hold you up, and when others are struggling, you can share your strength and love with them. The church is meant to be this kind of mycorrhizal network, where no one stands alone and everyone is supported in their journey of faith. [01:34:54]
Hebrews 10:24-25 (NRSV)
And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
Reflection: Who in your faith community needs your encouragement or support this week, and how can you intentionally reach out to strengthen your shared roots?
There are seasons in life when visible fruit is scarce, but that does not mean God is absent or that your efforts are wasted. Just as a tree does not bear fruit year-round, you may experience times of waiting, dormancy, or apparent lack of progress, yet God is still at work beneath the surface. The psalmist and the apostle Paul both encourage us not to grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time—God’s time—you will reap a harvest if you do not give up. Trust that God’s timing is perfect, and remain faithful, knowing that your season of fruitfulness will come. [01:39:19]
Galatians 6:9 (NRSV)
So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up.
Reflection: Where in your life are you tempted to give up because you don’t see immediate results, and how can you renew your trust in God’s timing today?
Prosperity in God’s eyes is not about material gain or worldly success, but about becoming everything He intends for you—rooted in His presence, sustained through every trial, and transformed into the likeness of Christ. Even in seasons of loss, waiting, or suffering, God is working to turn your pain into power, your struggle into strength, and your waiting into a testimony of His faithfulness. When you are planted in God’s word and purpose, you will prosper in ways that the world cannot measure, standing firm through every storm because your roots are deep in Him. [01:49:33]
Jeremiah 17:7-8 (NRSV)
Blessed are those who trust in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. They shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream. It shall not fear when heat comes, and its leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought it is not anxious, and it does not cease to bear fruit.
Reflection: How does God’s definition of prosperity challenge your own, and what is one area where you can shift your focus from worldly success to spiritual growth and trust in Him?
Psalm 1 paints a vivid picture of the blessed life, not as the world defines it, but as God intends. From the moment we wake up to the time we lay our heads down, we are faced with countless decisions—some trivial, others that shape our character and destiny. The psalmist urges us to resist the temptation to follow the advice and patterns of those who do not honor God, reminding us that our goals and values should be different from the world’s. Instead, true happiness and prosperity are found in delighting in God’s law and meditating on His word day and night. This is not a call to legalism, but to a life centered on God’s wisdom, where our priorities, energy, and focus are aligned with His purposes.
The imagery of being “like trees planted by streams of water” is central. Such trees are intentionally placed, rooted, and grounded by God Himself. They are not potted plants, easily toppled by the winds of life, but are deeply anchored in the soil of God’s faithfulness. This rootedness is not just individual but communal. Just as trees in a forest are connected by underground networks, so too are we as believers connected to one another, supporting and nourishing each other through life’s storms and droughts. Our spiritual community is vital; it is the network that keeps us standing when we feel weak or alone.
Seasons of life will come and go. There will be times of visible fruitfulness and times of waiting, when it seems nothing is happening. The psalmist reassures us that dormancy is not death; God’s timing is perfect, and our role is to remain by the stream, trusting that fruit will come in its season. Even when fruit is not visible, our “leaves”—our consistent faith, encouragement, and presence—are a ministry to others, providing life and hope in ways we may not see.
Prosperity, as God defines it, is not about material gain or worldly success. It is about becoming who God created us to be, being sustained and fruitful even in adversity. Like the trees that survived Hurricane Katrina because their roots reached deep into hidden streams, we too can withstand life’s storms if we are rooted in God’s word and community. No matter what comes, if we stay planted in God’s purpose, we will prosper—not always as the world measures, but in the fullness of God’s blessing and presence.
Psalm 1:1-6 (ESV) — Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
Quite noticeably, the first thing I noticed in this text as I went back and read it again is that the pathway to happiness, the pathway to blessing is first marked by prohibition. Stay away from these things and these folks. If you want to bless you. If you want to bless you. If you want to bless you. Do not walk in step with the wicked. Do not stand in the way that sinners stand or take. And this is so true. And there was a whole sermon just in that wisdom. You see, because the truth is this, we should have different ends and goals in this life than the wicked do. So why are we trying to keep up with them? Why are we trying to walk in step with them? [01:15:48] (60 seconds) #ChooseYourPathWisely
Christians who are constantly comparing ourselves with the material success and prosperity of those who promote wickedness are in for a difficult journey ahead. And here's why. Because we will constantly face this dilemma of temptation to walk in the same path, to follow in the same footsteps that they did in order to get what they got. [01:16:48] (36 seconds) #ResistMaterialTemptation
What he was saying is you have to be willing to let go of your attachment and valuation and pursuit of such things. Because we got different end goals for this life. Materialism and temptation to follow along and keep step with those promoting wickedness is not a new thing, in other words. [01:17:50] (25 seconds) #MotivesMatterMost
This means quite simply that my priority, my energy, my focus should be on the things of God. I should be dedicating my time and my energy to learning more about God's instruction and meditating on how to apply biblical and spiritual wisdom to my daily life. That should be my priority, that should be what takes precedence over everything else and every decision that I have to make. What would God desire? What would Jesus do? Because the sole aim and goal of my life must be to honor God and do what will make God smile. [01:22:56] (47 seconds) #RootedInFaith
When the storm comes, if your roots are deep in the living water of God's word, you may bend, but you won't break. You may shake, but you won't snap. You may lose some branches, but you won't lose your roots. When the drought came, the tree still stood. When the storms blew, the tree still stood. When the scoffers mocked, the tree still stood. When it wasn't the season for fruit. Oh, y 'all with me now? Somebody shout, I'm still standing. After all the hell I've been through, I'm still standing. After every reason I had to be done, I'm still standing. [01:49:00] (49 seconds)
You're still standing because you are not planted in popularity. You're planted in purpose. You're not planted in riches. You're planted in righteousness. You're not drinking from the world's shallow puddles. You're drinking from the streams of living water that'll never run out. I'm planted, I'm planted, I'm planted. I don't care what you try to say to get me to move. I'm planted. [01:49:53] (35 seconds)
Prosperity doesn't mean I won't cry. It don't mean I won't suffer. It don't mean I won't wait. But it means nothing I've been through will be wasted. It means God is in the process of turning my pain into power for my life. My waiting into witness. My struggle into more strength to keep on fighting. He's turning every test that I face into a testimony. [01:50:31] (31 seconds)
Because I'm planted. Because I have a source that the storms of life can't touch. Because I'm rooted in God's word. Blessed is the one who delights in the Lord. Blessed is the one who stays planted by the stream. Blessed is the one who trusts in God's timing. And blessed is the one who can say with confidence, And all I do, I will prosper. Because God planted me here. And if God planted me here, God intends for me to stay here. And he's going to give me everything I need to survive and to prosper here. Even if I can't see it yet, I still trust him. Because he showed up every other time. In my life, I'm planted. [01:51:22] (60 seconds)
