Bible ReadingColossians 2:4-23 “I am saying this so that no one will deceive you with plausible arguments. For though I am absent in body, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the firmness of your faith in Christ. Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority. In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him. Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ. Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind, and not holding fast to the head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God. If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations— ‘Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch’ (referring to things that all perish as they are used)—according to human precepts and teachings? These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.”

- What words or images does Paul use to describe a healthy Christian life in verses 6-7, and what do those pictures show about stability and growth? [38:53]
- According to Colossians 2:13-15, what actions does God take with sin, debt, and hostile powers? [54:48]
- In verses 16-23, what kinds of practices or claims were being used to judge, intimidate, or disqualify believers? [01:03:31]
Interpretation questions- Paul warns that arguments can sound reasonable and still deceive. Why is that danger especially serious in the church, and what makes a teaching “not according to Christ” even when it sounds polished? [33:19]
- Paul says believers have been filled in Christ because the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily in him. How does that challenge the idea that spiritual completion must be found in extra experiences, secret insight, or stricter rules? [43:37]
- Paul connects circumcision, baptism, and being made alive with Christ. How do those images show that salvation is God’s work in the heart rather than a human ritual or outward performance? [48:25]
- Paul says self-made religion has an appearance of wisdom but no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh. Why can outward rules restrain behavior for a time but still fail to change the inner person? [01:08:06]
Application questions- Reasonable words can still kidnap souls. What kinds of messages, teachers, podcasts, habits, or online voices sound convincing to you right now, and how can you test whether they are actually leading you toward Christ or away from him? [41:18]
- Believers are called to keep walking in Christ, not to stall out. Where have you sensed stalled momentum lately—prayer, obedience, gratitude, Scripture, church life, repentance—and what would one faithful next step look like this week? [35:56]
- A rooted believer is harder to blow around. What helps you stay rooted in Christ and his word when your emotions, fears, or circumstances make you feel unsteady? [37:30]
- The debt was not ignored; it was nailed to the cross. Is there a particular sin, failure, or old accusation that still feels like a live document against you? What would it look like to answer that accusation with the finished work of Christ? [53:25]
- Christ has already triumphed over the rulers and authorities. Where do you still tend to live as though the enemy has final control—fear, temptation, shame, discouragement, or something else? How might union with Christ change the way you face that battle? [58:22]
- Shadows are not the substance. Are there any Christian habits, preferences, traditions, or spiritual routines that have quietly become more central to you than Christ himself? How would you know if that has happened? [01:02:56]
- External rules cannot tame internal desire, but the indwelling Christ gives new desires. Where are you most tempted to rely on self-control alone, and what might deeper submission to Christ look like in that area? [01:10:46]
