WHEN IN ROMANS PT. 4: TRANSFORM, DON’T CONFORM

Romans opens the door to a straight-up question: if Jesus really gave everything, what should the response look like? The first eleven chapters stack up everything God has done. Sin is real, grace is amazing because sin is real, justification comes only through Christ, and grace does not excuse sin, it breaks sin’s authority. Romans 12 turns the corner and says the gospel does not just change where somebody is going when death comes. The gospel changes how a believer lives before getting there.

Paul moves from praise to surrender. Romans 11 says everything comes from God, exists by his power, and is intended for his glory. Romans 12 says, because of all that, bodies belong on the altar. A living and holy sacrifice means complete and total surrender, not an egg here and an egg there. The chicken contributes, but the pig gives everything. God is not looking for a little religious contribution. God wants the whole life.

The image of the living sacrifice gets right to the struggle. A dead sacrifice stays put, but a living sacrifice can crawl off the altar. Every morning brings that decision: stay surrendered because of what Jesus has done, or crawl away because control looks easier. Romans 12 does not call the believer to manage an image like a church shirt at school. Romans 12 calls the believer to surrender the heart.

Paul says the world is like a moving walkway. Culture keeps carrying people away from God, and nobody has to try hard to drift. Nobody wakes up planning to love money more, become selfish, stop praying, or stop relying on God. But transformation is intentional. God renews the mind, and the believer must surrender to that renewing instead of just standing still on the walkway.

Paul then shows what transformed people actually look like. Sincere love is love without hypocrisy, love that hates evil and clings to good. Real love is not just smiling at people, it is wanting God’s best for them. Devotion honors others above self, and the church should not compete for credit, but compete to give credit away.

Paul’s picture keeps going. A transformed believer serves with passion, stays hopeful in suffering, remains faithful in prayer, shares with people in need, practices hospitality, blesses persecutors, and refuses to let hatred reproduce inside. Humility rejoices with those who rejoice and mourns with those who mourn, even when somebody else receives the blessing that was wanted. Paul never says to just try harder. Fruit grows from healthy roots, and behavior grows from a transformed heart. The real prayer becomes, “Jesus, keep changing me.”
