When In Romans: A Heart Change

The story of Derek Fitzgerald puts the whole idea right on the table. A man received a new heart, and that new heart produced a new life, new desires, and new pursuits. The point is not that every transplant turns a person into an Ironman athlete. The point is that a new heart changes what a person goes after.

Paul takes that same reality into Romans 2. Romans 2:29 says that “a person with a changed heart seeks praise from God, not from people,” and that change is made by the Spirit. A changed heart is more important than religious activity. A person can know Scripture, attend church, sing worship songs, lift hands at the big moment, and still have a heart far from God. Religious activity can look good on the outside while the inside is corrupt, broken, and dying.

Paul speaks to Jewish believers who had major spiritual advantages. They had God’s law, they knew Scripture, they belonged to the covenant people, and they could teach others. But Paul presses the hard question: knowing so much, why is the life not showing it? Knowing the truth is not the same as living the truth. God desires transformation, not just participation.

Circumcision becomes Paul’s example because the outward sign meant little without the inward reality. God has always been after the heart. The private precedes the public, because what happens in secret eventually comes out. Ezekiel 36 says God gives a new heart and a new spirit, not just better habits or more information. When God changes the heart, what a person loves, pursues, spends, serves, and values begins to change.

A changed heart also produces changed desires, but not in a fake, instant, no-struggle kind of way. Struggle against sin can actually show that the Holy Spirit is working, because sin that once did not bother a person now does. Even good gifts can become gods when they rise above God’s rule. What matters in light of eternity is not just doing good stuff, but doing God’s stuff.

A changed heart leads to genuine obedience. God wants obedience to flow from love, not obligation. Jesus says, “If you love me, obey my commandments,” not “obey me so I will love you.” The Christian life is not behavior modification, because behavior modification makes the person the source. True heart change comes from the Holy Spirit. The question is not whether a person is trying enough. The question is whether a person is surrendering fully.
