God opens the door when the uncompromising word of God goes forward, and signs, wonders, and miracles follow the preaching and teaching of faith. The word of faith matters because without faith it is impossible to please God, and faith is how grace is received. The narrow way is still the word for right now, not the past, not regret, not dwelling on what used to fit, but living in the now with God.
Matthew seven sets the contrast plain: broad is the way that leads to destruction, and narrow is the way that leads to life. The narrow way is not restriction. The narrow way is the freeway, because where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. Psalms 23 gives the picture of that path: “The Lord is my shepherd,” and that means somebody is leading, somebody is guiding, and the sheep are not supposed to be shepherding themselves.
The Shepherd restores the soul and leads in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. The path of righteousness is not self-righteousness, not religious performance, and not trying to prove how good somebody is. Righteousness comes first as a gift before it becomes a walk. Romans five says those who receive abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by Jesus Christ. Second Corinthians says Jesus became sin so that His people might be made the righteousness of God in Him. Jesus does not merely point to the way. Jesus is the way, and Jesus is righteousness.
Grace does not give permission to leave the path. Grace gives power to walk the path. Repentance brings a person back when the light reveals a wrong direction. Repentance is not just “I did something bad.” Repentance is a change of mind and heart that changes direction back to Jesus.
Proverbs four says the path of the righteous gets brighter and brighter. The light exposes attitudes, thoughts, habits, and little sins that easily beset. Sin is whatever is not of faith, because faith works by love. Conviction says, “Come back to God.” Condemnation says, “You’re finished.” Peter’s story shows that failure does not have to become a destination, because Jesus says, “Feed my sheep,” and puts him back on the path.
Romans six makes freedom clear: every person becomes a servant of whatever is obeyed. True freedom is not having no path. True freedom is staying on the path with Jesus. Isaiah thirty-two says the work of righteousness shall be peace, and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance forever. The abundant life is faith, righteousness, peace, joy, and a soft heart that keeps receiving the word.
Key Takeaways
- 1. Righteousness comes before the walk Righteousness is not first a performance to achieve. Righteousness is first a gift received in Christ, and only after that gift is received does the walk make sense. The path of righteousness is not self-improvement with religious words on it, but Jesus leading step by step, faith by faith. [42:04]
- 2. Grace empowers the narrow path Grace never becomes permission to wander off and call it freedom. Grace becomes the power to stay with Jesus when the flesh wants another road. The narrow way may look tight at first, but it is actually the place where life opens up and bondage loses its grip. [50:29]
- 3. Repentance keeps direction clean Repentance is deeper than feeling bad about doing wrong. Repentance recognizes a wrong direction and turns the heart back toward Jesus. The mercy of God does not stand there saying, “Look what you did,” but calls the heart back to the Shepherd and the path. [43:46]
- 4. Conviction is not condemnation Condemnation says the failure is final, and it tells the heart to run from God. Conviction says, “This is not who God made this person to be,” and it draws the heart back to Him. Peter’s restoration shows that Jesus can take a denial, answer it with mercy, and put a disciple back to work. [66:42]
- 5. Freedom stays with Jesus The world calls freedom doing whatever the flesh wants, but Scripture calls that slavery to whatever gets obeyed. True freedom is not pathlessness. True freedom is the yoke of Jesus, the easy burden, the peace that keeps a person walking in righteousness. [69:18]
