Romans 10 sets the law and the gospel side by side and lets each one do its proper work. Paul says that Moses wrote about the righteousness that is by the law, “The person who does these things will live by them.” That sounds simple enough, but it is not easy. It is exactly impossible.
The law is good because God is good. The Ten Commandments were given to curb destructive behavior, to hold up a reflection for judgment, and to guide believers in thankful love toward God. God gave his will because he knows what gives life and what brings harm. Stealing, slandering, twisting marriage, abusing sex, coveting, and wandering off the path are not just arbitrary rule breaking. God knows why those things tear people apart.
Paul will not let the law become a ladder into heaven. The righteousness that is by faith does not ask, “Who will ascend into heaven?” as though Christ must be brought down. It does not ask, “Who will descend into the deep?” as though Christ must be raised by human strength. Faith lets God be God. Faith admits that fallen creatures cannot bring Christ down, cannot raise Christ up, and cannot save themselves.
Christ has already come down. Christ has already lived under the law perfectly. Christ did not abolish the law, but fulfilled it. Christ went to the cross and bled for every failure under that good law, was placed in the tomb with sin, and rose on the third day in glory. Christ now stands as the sure foundation over law, sin, death, and every accusation.
Paul says that the word is near, in the mouth and in the heart. Believing in the heart and confessing with the mouth are not two separate tricks for salvation. They belong together as one whole confession: Jesus is Lord. Out of the heart flow words, actions, and the life of faith.
Peter’s answer to Jesus, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God,” gives the shape of Christian confession. The Christian does not need to defend Christ as though Christ were weak. The Christian points to the Word and says what is believed. God even uses uncomfortable conversations as gracious opportunities to bless the one who speaks and the one who hears.
Moses himself shows the compassion of God. The child rescued from the river, the man who failed, the poor speaker called to speak for God, was shown grace. The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in kindness, and he brings his people into his presence.

Key Takeaways
- 1. The law exposes, not saves. The law is good because it comes from a good God, but it was never meant to be a savior. It restrains evil, shows the truth about sin, and guides faith in gratitude. The person who tries to stand before God by commandment keeping finds that “simple” has become “exactly impossible.” [41:26]
- 2. Faith lets God be God. The righteousness of faith refuses to drag Christ down to human size or pretend human strength can raise him from the dead. Faith receives what God has already done in Christ rather than manufacturing a rescue plan. The creaturely place is not shameful when Christ is the one who comes down, dies, rises, and saves. [43:26]
- 3. Christ fulfilled the good law. God did not erase his will or pretend sin was harmless. Christ fulfilled the law because the law is holy, and Christ bore the curse because sinners are not. The cross shows both God’s justice and God’s compassion without weakening either one. [44:27]
- 4. Confession flows from the heart. Paul’s heart and mouth language is a whole-life confession, not a mechanical formula. Genuine faith speaks because the heart has been claimed by Christ. Christian confession may feel uncomfortable, but God uses even those moments to point others to Jesus, the Messiah, the Son of the living God. [48:30]
- 5. God uses flawed servants graciously. Moses was rescued, failed, hesitated, and still became a spokesman for God. Grace did not pretend his weakness was strength, but God’s compassion carried him into God’s presence. The same Lord remains slow to anger and rich in kindness toward those who call on his name.
