Psalm 37 begins with the repeated command, “Do not fret,” and the Psalm asks for slow reading, not a quick skim before getting on to the entree. The forty verses may first seem long, repetitive, a little too simple, almost like white hats and black hats in an old western. The Psalm itself is not the problem, though. Wisdom literature is meant to be pondered, savored, and allowed to open up the bigger truth that is God.

David’s division between the righteous and the wicked is not a cheap “us and them.” Verse 21 gives the key distinction: “The wicked borrow and do not repay, but the righteous give generously.” Generosity becomes the sign of covenant life because Israel’s law was never merely about private religion. The Torah formed a people who would love God and love neighbor, protect the weak, support the widow and orphan, and refuse the selfish accumulation of gain. The righteous live out the spirit of that law. The wicked take what they can and “let the devil take the hindmost.”

Jesus’ parable of the sheep and the goats carries the same sharp edge. The sheep fed, clothed, welcomed, visited, and cared. The goats did not. The parable leaves no room for “shoats” or “jeeps,” just as Psalm 37 leaves no comfortable middle space between open hearted generosity and self-protective indifference.

Psalm 37 also looks beyond the immediate moment. David’s repeated talk of inheritance and forever points toward a world not yet fully seen, where the wicked are removed, the righteous dwell in peace, and death is banished. Jesus echoes this hope in the beatitude, “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” The meek are those who bear their own adversities and the prosperity of their enemies without envy, anger, or complaint.

David’s command not to fret is not a call to ignore injustice. Fretting corrodes, chafes, and agitates the heart until the desire for justice becomes revenge, love becomes hate, hope becomes bitterness, and faith becomes cynicism. Envy is even more insidious, because the success of the selfish can tempt the faithful to ask, “Why shouldn’t I get something for myself?”

Psalm 37’s promise, “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart,” is not a transaction. Delight in the Lord means leaving the desires of the heart with God. To commit one’s way to the Lord means to roll the burden onto him. God then makes righteousness shine like the dawn, and sometimes the desire of the heart turns out to be God’s plan after all.
